Levi Arthur Gent born 1885
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 21:30 GMT (UK) »
First of all, apologies for not getting back to all the folks who tried to help me. This is what I know so far:
Levi Arthur Gent born 1885 in Pottespury, Bucks married Florence Baker in March 1905. Children, Edward Henry (Gent) Baker and Levi Arthur Gent were sent to Marlesford Lodge and then to the Banstead School where they stayed until sent in service, Edward in 1921 and Levi jr in 1920. Two other children were born to Florence, William and Edith although no father is shown on her birth cert.
Levi Arthur Gent born 1885 is shown as being an inmate at the Britten Street Workhouse at the time of the 1911 census. I have now come to a brick wall regarding what happened to him after that - I will have the Metro Archives do a further search after the 1911 census.
I have been racking my brains trying to find him. The attestation records were burned during a bombing raid in WW2 and if he was 'missing in action' then there is no record of this. He could have been murdered on the streets and, having no identification, now lies in a pauper's grave OR maybe he changed his name which was far easier to do then than it is nowadays. I have searched the Commonwealth Graves Commission and persons leaving ports in England with no luck.
If anyone has anymore ideas I would be very grateful hearing from you. Vilma

Hi Vilma

Just going over what's already out there - although you are trying to figure out what happened to Levi after 1911 - it helps to have the bigger picture  :)  Some questions:

When & where were the two sons born:
Edward Henry (Gent) Baker
Levi Arthur Gent  (was he born & baptised Jun 1906 but not registered until 1907?)

Florence's son William:
Florence & he age 3,  in 1911 at 25 Arthur Street. Chelsea  I assume this is William George GENT birth registered 1908? Is Levi snr his father?
Florence is listed here in 1911 as age 28, & as a wife (not head).

When Levi discharged himself from the WorkHouse  in May 1911 (in the Census 1911 listed there as a married Painters Labourer age 27) did he have a home address?

You've indicated that Levi left the family sometime between 1907 and 1910? What supports this timeframe?

Cheers

Hi AMBLY:
Edward Henry Gent (my Dad)  later referred to as BAKER born 24 Feb 1905, 8 College Place, Chelsea, registered 29 Mar 1905 to Levi Arthur and Florence (Baker )who were married 25 Mar 1905.
Levi Arthur Gent jr born 10 Jun 1906, registered 14 Mar 1907 at 17 Gilray Square, Chelsea.Father shown as Arthur Gent of 110 Ifield road, Kensington. Mother Florence, formerly Baker.
William George Gent born 15 Mar 1908 at 52 Blenheim Street, Chelsea. Registered 09 Jul 1908. Father: Levi Arthur Gent, Mother: Florence, formerly Baker.
Edith Winnie Gent born 09 Mar 1916 at 25 Arthur Street, Registered 24 Mar 1916. No father shown on birth cert, mother Florence Gent (formerly Baker).
I have no information about Levi Sr after he discharged himself from Britten Street Workhouse in  May 1911.
Edward Henry was admitted to Marlesford Lodge 20 Apr 1909 and Levi Jr  24 Sep 1909. Later they were both sent to Banstead School.
Edward died in 1950 when I was 17 and had never spoken of his childhood.

OOps! I made an error in date of Edward Henry (Gent) Baker's death. It should read 1955 NOT 1950

Hi,

I don't have a subscription but a quick search on Ancestry shows several trees featuring a Levi Arthur Gent (b. 1885) plus a WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card.   Might be worth checking.   :-\

Hi All

Just to mention the WW1 medal card isn't for this Levi Arthur GENT.
The WW1 Levi  GENT (Tank Corps) was born abt 1896, and his father was also the same name.  There is also a Service record for him (same reg. number as on the Medal card) and Census records 1901/1911.

Cheers
