How to Find Records From Sandbach 1936 - 1947?
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello there :)

I know this is a long shot, but do you have any idea of whether there would be records of people living in Sandbach between 1936 and 1947 - and how/ where I could find them?

My mother lived in Sandbach between these years, along with her mother, father and sister. She went to Sandbach school. She remembers the headmaster's name was Mr. Woodward.

They were with the circus, and when war broke out, they bought a house and settled in Sandbach. Her father worked for Foden's during the war, and ran the "Welcome Home Fund" entertainment group. He was also a member of the Home Guard, was in charge of the Italian prisoners, and a member of the VAF.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions of where I could find any records.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, Orault and welcome to Rootschat.
Cheshire Archives and Local Studies at Chester would be a good starting point for you.
This is the link to their website.  http://archives.cheshire.gov.uk/default.aspx
If you enter the online catologue and put Foden into the title it will reveal 35 pages of information on Foden's which is held in the archives.  Don't be put off by all of the drawings, there is mention of photographs and the Foden News for 1939 to 1974.  You would have to visit the archives or hire one of their researchers to gain any information from them.  It would be worth phoning them to see what else they hold that might assist you.
I would also suggest that you contact the Cheshire Family History Society and look at their website at fhsc.org.uk.  There will probably be someone that may also be able to help if you email them.
Regards
Kathb
