Pensioner of the Third Dragoons 1860

Hi there

Bit of a novice regarding military records.
I have a marriage cert of an Elizabeth GREEN, 1862, Bishop Auckland, Durham, that refers to her father, Thomas, as a pensioner of the Third Dragoons. I've no idea the best way of trying to find more about Thomas. I've done the usual search engine look-ups, but nothing comes back

Any pointers much appreciated

British Army records are at the National Archives, Kew, London.  Army discharge records/documents would probably be the most useful at this stage though there are bound to be quite a few Thomas GREENs (it being such a common name) so you may need to pin down some dates first.

Have you found Elizabeth with her family in the 1861 or previous census years?  If not, that may be a good place to start.

Thanks for the response.  I have been trying to look in '61 but no joy - which is why I've been trying the military route, but as you say the commonality of the name is going to be problematic

Any age or occupation for Elizabeth?  What was her place of residence in 1862
?

There aren't many 'right age' Thomas Greens in 1861 (not in Durham at least) - but that's always presupposing he was living there!

Thanks for them mail. I haven't got the cert to hand, but pretty sure she is 19 and living in High Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, and spinster, no occupation that I remember

Slighlty off topic, I see you have HARDY in Durham. I have Hardy links to my Greens, are 'yours' in Bishop Auckland by any chance?

Re Hardy's - mine mostly seem to come from Northumberland, with my grandmother landing in Durham sometime in the first decades of the last century!

Given the Barnard Castle birth for Elizabeth, this might make

Thomas Green, born 1787 in Pately Yorkshire, living in Barnard Castle in 1861 with family

as a favourite to be 'your' Thomas.

WO 97/56/51 THOMAS GREEN Born OSTREE, Staffordshire Served in 3rd Dragoons Discharged aged 46 1794-1818
WO 97/56/52 THOMAS GREEN Born TIDEFORD, Cheshire Served in 3rd Dragoons Discharged aged 47 1796-1814

There will be sefvice papers for both these men on microfiche there off the shelves which can be copied.

hi ec,the 3rd dragoons fought at talavera,albuera and vitoria in the peninsular war 1809-1814,he may have fought there,mack
