Who is the first wife Ann or Mary
« on: Wednesday 28 December 11 15:15 GMT (UK) »
My 3times Great Grandfather John Attwood married Priscilla c1816 they had 5 children.
I have a copy of John's will, it includes Priscilla and her 5 offspring and also a son Thomas and the executor is a son Joseph.

I have found baptisms for two Thomas's - 1795 with parents John and Mary and 1804 with parents John and Ann. Both at Old Swinford - which would make sense as they were in the Lye area.
There is a Joseph baptised 1793 also at Old Swinford, with parents John and Mary.
There is a marriage for A John Attwood to Mary Round in 1793 but I cant find anything for an Ann.

I have been looking at Old Swinford Monumental Inscriptions and have found one which I believe to be Johns - it includes a wife Mary but neither Ann or Priscilla get a mention!

I know in the scheme of things it doesn't matter as I am descended from Priscilla but it is nice to tie up the loose ends, so if anyone has any suggestions as to who came first  Mary or Ann. Maybe he didn't marry Ann because if the gravestone is the right one Mary didn't die until 1812!!!!

IGI -extracted gives
Baptism Thomas Attwood 3 May 1795 Old swinford
death 18 Oct 1796
Parents John Attwood/Mary

so maybe Thomas was son of John and Ann?

maybe John Attwood who married Mary is a different John??

Thanks Suzard
I'd also wondered if it was a different John except for the fact that the monumental inscription mentions Alexander Attwood his sister Susannah.

Wonderif Mary and Ann are the same person  - and in reality the name was mary Ann

I have a great aunt Mary Jane who sometimes is Mary and others Jane -she married using the name jane

Will have to ponder a while on this

Good question!
Though how we find an answer I don't know - she was Mary when she married, Joseph baptism and her burial. I can't see any more baptisms at Old Swinford for either Mary or Ann.
Wonder if the County Express was around in 1812 maybe there was an obituary

Hi Cember, John married a Mary Ann, think she was Mary Ann Round, then Priscilla who was Widow Allport, some details here:-

No County Express until 1866.
