BURY BARRACKS

Am trying to trace my ancestors Killalea - not having much success before 1861.  I can see there is a man and child by this name on the 1851 census with an address of Bury Barracks.  Would this have been a workhouse as there are a large number of inhabitants.  The child is only 1 so I presume it would not have been a "barracks" as stated in the address

Although the christian name could be James     it does state 'wife'  with son John.  It is quite normal for census entries to have the families listed separately from the husbands when they are in the armed services.

It might be worthwhile trawling through the entries at the beginning of these Barrack entries as the husband/father should be listed there.

Hi,

There is a Thomas Killilet (sic) aged 23, Married, Private in the 88th Regiment, born Ireland at the Bury Barracks.  There is also a John Killilet aged 24 and unmarried also at the Barracks.

They look to be the 88th Regiment, Connaught Rangers.

According to this site Bury Barracks
the regiment spent the first half of 1851 in Bury. (scroll down the page to 'England')

Looking at the census, there is an entry for a similar first name just above your family- I wonder if the name is Jane?
