just saw your post and wondered, have you tried contacting Edinburgh Council Burial Records dept.? Try this link but if it's no use they may be able to help put you on the right track.

As you have the funeral details from The Scotsman, you'll have an idea of when he died (or scotlandspeople may give you an exact date). Even without a headstone, there should be a record of who is buried where. I've contacted several councils in the past and although some are more helpful than others, you usually get the info you want, (they may ask a fee).

Thanks Ali. I may well give them a go. I've spoken to someone who attended William's second wife's funeral in 1963 and he says that, as far as he remembers, William had refused to have a stone. Inconsiderate old man!
