Morningside Cemetery

Does anyone know if there is a list of monumental inscriptions for Morningside Cemetery?  My great grandfather William Grant lived in Morningside all his adult life at 28 Warrender Park Terrace and then 13 South Gillsland Rd, and I was wondering if he and his daughter Agnes might be buried there.

Thanks.  Will give it a go later.  I've got to break my cardinal rule on going near a shop on Boxing Day to change a coat I bought my husband, which is a size too small, in case they sell out of the larger ones in the sale.  What a nightmare!  I'll get it over with now.  I'll be lucky to be back by dark.

There is a pair of books, compiled by members of the Morningside Association - "Monumental Inscriptions In Morningside Cemetery As They Were In 1981". This pair of books can be found in Edinburgh Central Library, and presumably in the National Library of Scotland and Morningside Library.

If you are too far from any of these libraries, it may be worth your while asking locally if these books are available through an inter-library loan scheme.

It is a few years since I have consulted these books. The books also give the grave number so that it should be able to be found if you go to the cemetery.

Thanks for replying, ADP.  I have just come across those books which aren't on-line, and I was wondering where I could find a copy.  My niece, who lives in Edinburgh, will be back on holiday from university in the Easter so I'll ask her to go and look them up for me.  I am learning that patience is the essence of this game!

If the deaths are 1950 or earlier, the funeral notices may have been in The Scotsman, and able to be found on their online archive site (expensive unless your local library gives you free online access). If they died post 1950, then if your niece is going into the Central Library, she can consult the microfilms of The Scotsman and the Evening News for the funeral notices. The funeral notices will tell you which cemetery or crematorium these people were buried or cremated at.

Just saw this post, sure I saw a stone for some Grant's on the path we take to mum's grave, will pay more attention next time & see if its your's.

Thanks for the offer.  I found an entry in the Scotsman listing his funeral at Morningside so he is definitely there, but I was talking to someone recently who attended his second wife's funeral some 40 years later and he said that his understanding was that William had refused to have a stone on some obscure religious grounds.
