Birds family of Bakewell, Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 25 December 11 01:44 GMT (UK) »
Merry Christmas to all the lovely Rootschat helpers. :-*

I am trying to find evidence of the origins of the Birds family at Bakewell Derbyshire.  The first Birds that I have from a researcher is William Birds who died around 1747/1748 and his wife Mary (possibly Cartledge) who died around 1746/1747.  They had a son Thomas born 22 Mar 1713 who married Mary Gilbert born 30 Apr 1726.  Their son David Birds born 8 Mar 1758 married(no record)  Catharine Moss (not sure of surname) and went to live in Shropshire.  I am descended from this line.

I have tried everything to find BDMs to confirm some of the earlier family records and to go back further.  After 1792 I have a pretty good picture of the family in Shropshire and from newspaper articles and census records I have found that these people were wealthy.  2 went to Cambridge in the early 1800s and 2 went to Oxford in the later 1800s and one youngster was in the East India Company as a lieutenant (died in India at 20).  Also the amounts in the wills were in excess of £10,000.

One son of Thomas Birds and Mary Gilbert, Thomas Birds born 1752 lived at Eyam and had a son Thomas who died in 1829 at Eyam leaving a large collection of fossils that were gathered by him and his predecessors from the lead mines and from Ireland.

So you can see why I am curious and I have not found any directories to locate where they lived in Eyam or Bakewell.

Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Yours gratefully
Kris Wood

Although I cannt find David and Catherines Marriage a Tree has her as Catherine Moss Taylor, Father JOSEPH

Now as their Children have Moss or Taylor as asecond name this is possible.
IGI has a submitted Marriage which needs to be checked;
Joseph TAYLOR
Katherine MOSS
23 April 1767, Lilleshall, Shrophire

(I noticed Joseph Taylor BIRDS Marriage to Maria WAGER on FreeREG 1838 with Fathers names/Occp's)

This would make possible Daug Catherine/Katherine born post 1767.

Hi Kris

From Val Neal's transcript of the Bakewell PR (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/ValNealCDs.html#Bakewell) :

Sarah, daughter of William & Mary Birds baptised 6/4/1710
Elizabeth, daughter of William & Mary Birds baptised 19/9/1712, buried 25/3/1713
Thomas, son of William & Mary Birds baptised 22/3/1714

Mary, wife of William Birds buried 13/2/1747
William Birds buried 17/2/1748

Neither William's baptism nor his and Mary's marriage appear in the Bakewell PR.

I have Birds ancestry in the adjacent parish of Youlgreave, and it seems quite possible that your family could have originated there as there were Birds in Youlgreave for at least two or three centuries before Bakewell. However having said that I can't see any sign of your William being bapt there.

Note that a number of spelling variants appear in the Youlgreave family which you may want to be aware of - Birds/Bird/Byrd/Byrde/Byrdes/Byrds/Bryd/Bryde/Bryds.

My line goes back from Mary Birds c1640-1701 - http://www.genealogy.mallen.org.uk/517-MaryBirds.html

There is a will of William Birds of Bakewell, proved 29/4/1748, at Lichfield Record Office, which is obviously your man (available via http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/contact/LichfieldRecordOffice/home.aspx )
Too many to list! But always particularly interested in my eight ggp lines : ALLEN, HODGKINSON, FLINT, SWINDELL, SHELDON, BINGHAM, JACKSON - all in Derbyshire; and ELLWOOD in Cambridgeshire

Hi. Some of this is confirmed by Ince's Pedigrees here
http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/INC-095.htm#099d
Only David's wife is down as Catherine Taylor.

According to Ince then your William had brothers John and Francis both of Elton. So it might be worth looking at the Elton area?

According to Beeley Parish Records Thomas BIRDS married Agnes HEALD on 3 May 1578.

There is also reference to a Sybilla BIRDS baptized 1 Feb 1715 parents George and Anne.

Death of Elizabeth BIRDS unmarried 11 Jan 1726.

Don't know whether any of these help.

Thank you very much Trish,MSAllen,Gardener and Di.  Your help has been very encouraging.  Trish, I didn't know about FreeReg.   Which is marvellous.  MSAllen, your website will keep me busy making connections. Gardener, that website helps a lot.  And Di, yes those references do help.

Again, thank you all, and I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year 2012.

The Birds/Beard family you mention is in Inces Pedigree in the Wirksworth registers. They seem to have come from Youlgreave prior to Bakewell. I descend from this Birds family through the Taylors and webster families of Ashbourne. Both these later families were Attorneys from father to son, and were two of the richest families in the area.
