The only Burial Haltwhisle that could be possibly Robert was 28 Oct 1777, no age given, abode Grandy's know Beltingham (Bellingham?)

Just dropping in as a 'local' to say that Beltingham and Bellingham are two totally different places  :D

Here is Beltingham, some ten miles west of Hexham https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=14.8&lat=54.97076&lon=-2.33043&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

And here is Bellingham, some 16 miles north of Hexham https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=13.8&lat=55.14430&lon=-2.25078&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Only just joined rootschat - didn't know it existed!
Really interested to see posts about the Lowes family - my ancestor is Nicholas Lowes 1792 - my paternal grandmother and grandfather both descend from him - my grandfather from his daughter Mary 1836 & my grandmother from his son Nicholas 1832.
I have a handwritten family tree that was given to my Dad many years ago by Brian Swan from Whitley Bay - that starts with Nicholas Lowes 1792 at the top. I've no idea who Brian is, where he fits into the tree, or how he tracked down my Dad - anybody on here know him?
I live in Hexham, but have never been to Corsenside - but plan to go next week to see if I can find any family graves.
Janet

Hello, I am descended from Nicholas Lowes 1792 sister, Mary Ann Lowes b 1793 Bellingham. I have DNA matches confirmed from both Nicholas Lowes descendants and their brother Joseph too.
Father was Benjamin Lowes b 1764 Whiteside, Haltwhistle and mother was Elizabeth Heron b 1766 The Hole, Bellingham.
They married 5 Dec 1790 St Cuthbert, Bellingham
Benjamins parents were Robert Lowes and Mary Hutton
Elizabeth Herons parents were Nicholas Heron and Mary Milburn.
There is a helpful will of Nicholas Heron, and you can see he left substantial amount to daughter Elizabeth and son in law Benjamin Lowes.
I visited all these places last year. I am still unsure where at Holystone / Dueshill Benjamin Lowes lived. There is a beautiful grand house there (recently on Rightmove!) with a very intact Bastle House in the grounds. Were they in the big house, or the Bastle House? Either way, it’s an absolutely stunning location and well worth a visit. Any more information about Benjamin Lowes always welcome!

2 August 1844: Newcastle Courant
Quote
NEWCASTLE & NORTHUMBERLAND ASSIZES
...
REED v. ROBERT LOWES.
Mr Stephen Reed, one of the coroners for the county, sought by this action to recover the sum of £84 13s 8d, alleged to be due to him by Robert Lowes, as a party to an agreement between the plaintiff and Benjamin Lowes, the defendant's father. Benjamin Lowes formerly occupied a farm belonging to Mr Reed, at Woodhouses, near Rothbury. The tenantcy expired last year, and some dispute arising between the parties, Mr Nicholas Wright was called in as an arbitrator, and finally made an award in favour of the plaintiff for the amount named. Robert Lowes, the defendant, appeared in the agreement, together with his father and wo brothers.—Verdict for the plaintiff for the full amount: execution in a week.

[The tithe records for the Corsenside property ('The Crag') do indeed name Stephen Reed as the landowner.]

This looks to be the end of Benjamin Lowes' tenancy at The Crag. The family must have been newly arrived at Woodhouses in the 1841 census.
