OK. My father (who claims to know every farm name in the entire county, with some justification) confirms the old bastle house along the road from Dueshill SE of Holystone is called Woodhouses.

Shawbush is some 2km NE of Bellingham on the road to West Woodburn (NY 868 842). Not a big place, probably just a cottage these days. Maybe always was?

the bastle is still there , have a nice photo.
the Woodhouses Farm and cottage is now called Holystone Grange on modern os maps. but its down as a farm on the maps of 1866 approx.
Have pictures of Craig , talked to the owners father  and Colwellhill where Edward was a shepherd and the pub

Dear all
I came across this post. I also have ancestors called Lowe who link to the people above.
My direct ancestor was Mary Ann Lowes b1793 Bellingham d1878 Easington. Her parents were Benjamin Lowes and Elizabeth Heron. She was the sister to Nicholas Lowes who was the farmer of 940 acres at Woodhouses, Dueshill.

Only just joined rootschat - didn't know it existed!
Really interested to see posts about the Lowes family - my ancestor is Nicholas Lowes 1792 - my paternal grandmother and grandfather both descend from him - my grandfather from his daughter Mary 1836 & my grandmother from his son Nicholas 1832.
I have a handwritten family tree that was given to my Dad many years ago by Brian Swan from Whitley Bay - that starts with Nicholas Lowes 1792 at the top. I've no idea who Brian is, where he fits into the tree, or how he tracked down my Dad - anybody on here know him?
I live in Hexham, but have never been to Corsenside - but plan to go next week to see if I can find any family graves.
Janet

This probably just confirms information referred to above, but in the 1846 Tithe Valuation, the Township of Dueshill in the Parish of Holystone had just four occupiers of land, recorded as:

John Bell, Dueshill, 484 acres
Benjamin Lowes, Woodhouses, 721 acres
John Weatherston, Harehaugh, 320 acres
John Ord, South Yardhope, 979 acres

On the tithe map the first three plots are contiguous, running north to south. South Yardhope lies to the west of Dueshill but is detached from the others, separated by Holystone Common. These are all still discernible on modern maps, although North Yardhope is more prominent that South Yardhope. (These two are separated by the Yardhope Burn, with North Yardhope not lying in the Township of Dueshill.)

I would say Benjamin was bapt 1 Jul. 1764, Holy Cross,  Haltwhistle to ROBERT/MARY

He has siblings bapt;
GEORGE 02 Jul 1752
EDWARD 29 Sep 1754
JOSEPH 10 Apr 1757
JAMES 04 Oct 1759
NICHOLAS 26 Oct 1761
MATTHEW 24 Aug 1769 abode Burnmoor
Parents Robert/Mary
+ Likely;
ELIZABETH 1 Jul 1770 Father Robert, abode Warden Waterside

ROB Lowes married Mary HATTON same Church 17 Apr 1752

Possible Burial of MARY Lowes  25 Jun 1816 age 63 (c 1753)

The only Burial Haltwhisle that could be possibly Robert was 28 Oct 1777, no age given, abode Grandy's know Beltingham (Bellingham?)
But if him Mary survived him for 40 odd years.

All the info I have posted was from FreeREG www.freereg.org.uk

Looking at the tithe records more broadly I now realise that there are two separate entries for a Benjamin Lowes in the Northumberland tithe records dated seven years apart. These both relate to places discussed in the (much) older posts on this thread, which sometimes seem, to me at least, to consist of two different conversations. So, for clarity:

1) Benjamin Lowes in 1846 at Woodhouses, Holystone as detailed in my previous post

2) Benjamin Lowes in 1839 in the parish of Corsenside, at a place named as The Crag on the tithe map and also on later OS maps and corresponding to the modern Cragg Farm. This is WNW of Bellingham, and just a little south of West Woodburn.
