Bury St Edmunds Town Sergeant
« on: Friday 23 December 11 01:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
In the 1871 to 1891 Census for Bury St Edmund's, Henry Hayhoe, my g.g. uncle, was described as Town Sergeant. At this time, would the role have been largely ceremonial or would there still have been some law enforcement element?

There's quite a bit about the role of a Town Sergeant here:

www.townsergeant.com  (albeit about Southampton).

Was Henty a grocer?  If so you may find this interesting:
