John Hughes was one of the "unsung heroes" on the last series of BBC Radio 4's Making History. It is available to "listen again" at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b016ldsw#synopsis

and from there a link to a piece about a book on the subject (and there are more links there):

Hi,

this is my first post here, google helped me find this thread which has listed some of my family (my great great grandfather) Thomas James senior. but i don't seem to be able to find any records of him returning to Wales.

i don't seem to be able to find any information about any of them, although i know they did return (my Grandfather still lives in Cardiff today)

anyone have any pointers or info i can use?

thanks, JuvUK

Hello to all of you!
I live in Donetsk (that's how Hughesovka is called now) and I am highly interested in lives of those families that had stayed here. I am doing a research about the history of this town...
So, anyway, if there is a way I can help you with finding your roots - just let me know, I will be literally grateful for you to ask me for a help!!!
Or if you have relatives that are connected to John Hughes or Hughesovka, contact me.
If you have any information on families that still are living here, please
Write me: (*)
Thank you ;)

Well worth a look is the Gathering the Jewels site, http://www.gtj.org.uk/en/ just put Hughesovka into the search box (but set aside some time - there's a lot to see).

The Old Merthyr Tydfil site has some material as well; for those researching I am sure that contributions to the site would be welcomed. http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/hughesovka.htm
