I have only just learnt, because of the chance discovery of some old letters of my grandfather's in an attic in Australia, that my ancestor was one of those that accompanied John Hughes to The Ukraine. Apart from the fact that he worked in an Iron works in Merthyr Tydfil I know little else.
I quote from my Grandfather's letter:
"Our Grandfather had to seek employment away from home, so he had a job at the steel works at Merthyr Tydvil(sic) in Glamorganshire, after being there quite a while he was picked as one of 25 to go out to Russia to teach the Russians in the process of steel making, and would you believe it, it was only Uncle John and my Mother were born then. They started from home in a horse and cart (no cars then) to meet the train at Carmarthen, and our Great Grandparents went with them to the station to see them off."
I wonder if anyone has information about John Lewis (buried 18/3/1888 aged 55 years at Rhymney) and his wife Margaret, and their daughter (my Grandfather's mother). I would be ever so grateful if you would be kind enough to share any information with me.
Many thanks in in advance.
Huw.
