I have him as Colonel Robert Buchanan and was living at Nether End Penrith in 1811and mentioned in the will of his brother William in 1833. Otherwise no birth/ military/death details.  Thank you

I found these entries in the London Gazette -

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/14006/pages/399
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/15141/pages/540
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/16168/pages/1061

There is another of that name who was a junior medical officer. One problem is that the LG uses OCR to produce the index. There can be problems reading some of the older issues, so there may be more that are harder to find.

You need to track these men over their later service to see if any made (Lt) Colonel.

Late reply to your kind efforts.  I think the Robert Buchanan promoted to Lieutenant might be the one.  Mentioned at the same time is a connection by marriage Duncan Campbell.  Would be most grateful if you could give any pointers as to how to look for his later career (as you have no doubt surmised military history is not my strong suit!)

Many thanks for your help.

I am also attempting to research this Robert Buchanan who I believe married 9 Oct 1789 in Maryport, Cumberland.  The daughter Augusta (born & baptized 1792) married a Thomas Dunnett - the lineage goes down to an interesting California family.

Best wishes

Hi   I found more details for Robert Buchanan and of his naval career.  Actually this research is a sideline to support family relationships with my own family.  I don't have any details of this marriage, but do have a later one.  Please pm me if this would be of interest
Kind regards, Brenda
