Ebenezer Leigh born c.1776-7
« on: Tuesday 20 December 11 20:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone has any info about Ebenezer Leigh? He was my 4x great grandfather. I know he was born in Lancashire in 1776/7 ish and died in horwich in approx 1849.  He married Betty Hope in 1790's, but i thin she died and he then married Ellen Crook.  He had a few kids with both wives, especially Ellen.  I am descended from his son William Willoughby Leigh.

The trouble is, i cant seem to find who Ebenezer's father was, or if possible, even further back???!!!

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, so its not easy for me to get down to the Lancashire area to do research.  If its any help, it seems that most baptisms and marriages etc were done at St Katherines in heyrod???? or blackrod??

It seems that Leigh is quite a common surname in the lancashire area, so i am hoping someone has some info for me pleeeeeeease???!!!

Thanks all,

John

Wow that was quick to get some answers!!!!! Thank you!!

I was led to believe it was nearer to 1776 he was born....where did you get the info about his father being called ralph and Ebenezers birth as 1771? and is it from somewhere i can look at please?

That tallys with his death in 1849 aged 77. Does anyone know if there are still gravestones standing from those times??? Although knowing my luck it will be a patch of bare grass as usual!!...haha

Am i pushing my luck to ask if anyone can elaborate or get any details from further back please??

Once again, thanks very very much mosiefish and radcliff.

John.

Hi,

Take a look at www.lan-opc.org.uk  :)

There is also a  picture of Horwich Chapel (Holy Trinity, Horwich) on the same site:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Horwich/trinity/index.html

It looks as though the gravestones are still there.

Yes, Horwich still has a churchyard full of stones, with a few going back before 1800, though there is never a guarantee that the people you are interested in ever spent the money to put one up.

Most stones seem to be in good condition and legible. The local stone stands the weather quite well.

Most churchyards have groups of stones with the same surname. Horwich is different - nearly all the inhabitants are incomers who arrived with the industrial revolution.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
