Forbes in cookstown
« on: Tuesday 20 December 11 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm doing a bit of research for a friend, which has lead me to Ireland. I don't have a lot of experience with Irish research and am trying not to spend my friend's money for her - I have a William John Forbes, who according to the Irish Civil Registration was born 3rd Quater 1881, Cookstown which I believe is County Tyrone. Is there a way I can get his parents' names without the expense of sending up for a birth cert?
Thanks for your help
Kate

Possibly the correct William John Forbes in 1901 census (unfortunately not living with parents):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Munterevlin/Drumenny__Stewart_/1727815/

LDS website has some extracted births but I don't see one for him so getting the birth certificate might be the only option to get names of both parents.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Kate.
There is a William John Forbes born in Ardboe R.C 1881.  Father is John.
Roots Ireland website has an advanced search where you can input names without buying the Cert.

I am also researching the Forbes family from Ardboe.  Gabriel Forbes who emigrated to Scotland about 1869.
His father was James Forbes and his mother Catherine McKee.

Regards,
Anne

Hi Kate.

William John Forbes born in 1881.  Baptised in Ardboe R.C.  Parents are John Forbes and Sarah Devlin.
Hope this is the one you are looking for.
Parents were married in 1880 in Ardboe. R.C.

Anne,
I am unsure if it is the same church but I have the marriage of John Forbes and Sarah Devlin taking place in COAGH R.C.Church on 15 Jan 1880.

Hi Kate,

Some members of the Forbes family that I am researching were baptised in Arboe R.C and some in Coagh R.C..  Unfortunately I am not familiar with the area.  As far as I can tell Ardboe R.C is the main parish and the additional parish of Coagh R.C was created in 1862
Devlin is a very common name in that area.  I have been looking at the parish records of Ardboe and wheras Forbes is not that common unfortunately Devlin is. I think the Forbes family that I am researching came form Drumeeny.
I will have a look at the microfilm the next time in am in the National Library here in Dublin for you.  Rootsireland are now starting to charge for look ups unfortunately.

Regards,
Anne

I am from Ardboe.
Drumaney is a townland in that parish.
There are still Forbes's there.
If you look at 'Ardboe Gallery' on Facebook there should be plenty of information there. They also have all the parish records and may do genealogical research.
