FANNON Patrick....Athlone
« on: Tuesday 20 December 11 05:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I am hoping someone in here can help me find my Patrick Fannon and any relatives he had. He was born in the Parish of Drum in or near the town of Athlone c 1823/24. I have him as joining the 67th Regt of Foot in Galway on 5th June 1840 aged 17. He served 21yrs & 41 days inculding abroad in Nth America, Gibralta and the West Indies. He came out to Australia aboard the "Vimiera" 22 Dec 1865. He married a Mary Lyon or Lyons about 1938. They came out with two sons, Martin c1863 & Michael c1865. He may have travelled extensively with the army so do not know where he married Mary or where their two sons were born.
I would dearly love to be able to find anything at all on our Patrick and Mary and their two sons, I have the rest from when they came to Oz. He is my biggest brick wall at the moment.
Kind Regards
Kazlee

not sure what resources you have tried already to trace Patrick's baptism - the civil parish of Drum is located to the north of the Co. Roscommon section of Athlone, the rest of the town was in Co. Westmeath.

Availability of records depends on the denomination of your Fannon family - I dont see mention of surviving Church of Ireland records for the parish. The civil parish of Drum is included in the RC parish of St. Peter's based in the west of Athlone.

If younger son Michael was born in Ireland in 1865, then he might be the place to start as civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864.

Do death certs for Patrick or Mary give any details on their parents, place of birth or marriage ?... also worth double checking marriage and death certs for the two sons for clues to place of birth etc

see :  Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

it must have been a civil or Church of Ireland marriage since it's before 1864 - maybe mixed denomination ?

here's a link to that baptism for reference : Martinus Fannion

Hi Shane and Heywood.
Thanks for all that info, it looks promising. I have passed it all onto my distant cousin who may follow it up more as I will be traveling around Oz and will not have all that much time to give it my full attention.
I really appreciate you doing the look ups for me, and as you say Shane, it may have been a mixed denomination. When we ravelled to Ireland in 2007, we went to Athlone to try and find the Parish but could not find any Fannons at the time...I even tried ringing a few in the local phone book and left an article in the local newspaper. I heard from a few people willing to help but no family I'm afraid!
Heywood, I was told they may have married in or near Dublin but it looks like it may have been Athlone...
I really should not have gotten started again as it will get me hooked again!
Thanks again guys
Kazlee
