Rowe in Newfoundland/Bristol
« on: Monday 19 December 11 22:49 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Darthula Eliza Rowe born in Newfoundland in approx 1812/13.

She married Charles Bullen Davis in Bristol, England in 1834. CBD was a master mariner I wondered in they fell in love in their passage to England!

I have the Davis family traced back to 1680's and would love to add some more information/background to Darthula.

The only info I have is from her census records and death cert all of which state St John's Newfoundland.

Anybody got any suggestions how to proceed?

I have listed what I know on the Rowe in Newfoundland website - but have made no connections.
I have made contact with some local researchers in NF - who would like further details before they begin.
Anybody know of passenger lists in 1833/4 from NF to Bristol.
Anybody come across any other Rowe's in Bristol born in Newfoundland?

Hi,

There is a thread in the Rootschat Resources section that lists several Newfoundland sites.  Hopefully you can find some assistance here.

I don't know very much about Newfoundland genealogy, but I hope these links can get you started.

RK :)

I have Rowes in NF and my uncle is a Rowe from NF,

Do you know the town?  It would help tremendously.

Do you know the parents?  Siblings?  Anything?

I have been able to find a lot in NF, but Rowe is a common name there.

I just searched on the grand banks site and I cannot see anything.  However, there is far more in the archives in st johns than there is online.  The problem with the archives is that you have search parish by parish.  It can be tedious if you don't know the parish you are looking for.

One thing that would probably help a local researcher, is whether you know the religion.  Catholicism was only legally permitted after about 1800, and even then registration was sketchy - people often baptized and married in their homes.  Some went back to Ireland, and some baptized and married in the Protestant churches in order to pretend to be Protestant.  Depending on her age, this may give you some direction.

Research in NF is difficult because so little of it is transcribed.  Even when I was at the archives, I could not copy or take pictures.  This wasn't to protect the records.  It had to do with ownership of the records and the churches don't allow it.

Something else to keep in mind is that parish priests sometimes forgot to register people and then add them in bunches.  I was told this by a parish administrator as an explanation for my g grandmother's birth being wrong by more than a year.

Good luck!

Charles Bullen Davis has a Barque called Florence which travelled to NewFoundland. I can;t help with the Newfoundland Side of things. But I have a line directly to myself from him. He had several ships/barques one travelled from Scotland to London with lamp oil. Also from Wyke Regis to Madeira. If you have any info on him I would be very interested, it may give us a clue as to background. Did Darthulah have any brothers or sisters?

Alan :)

Charles & Darthula are my Great Great Great Grandparents. I am descended from their son Frederick.

I'm interested to know how you found the Barques - I had come across The Florence.

In terms of what I know the family I have traced the reasonably well - I have also exchanged with other people also related to them. Apart from Darthula - I still haven't got any further forward with her.

I am just about to go away for 10 ten and will post accurate details of what I know then -
from memory by 1841 they had moved to London and from that point Charles was sailing to Maderia a lot from London. I have a copy of his mariners record from Kew - which again from memory only starts in about 1850.

The family then stayed in London for the rest of their lives. Interestingly of the children one daughter married a Maderian and went to live there and there are still descendants there.

Another daughter married the son of a wealthy Dutch man - Hermanus Albertus Ten Bruggenkate - if you search Ten Bruggenkate on the web - you can pick up the family details.

Did you know Charles had an older brother James - who was also a master mariner.
