Do have dates, or a location in Limerick city or county for your Hastings family ?

see :

My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

according to the English BMD Index the date of birth for Denis was given by the informant at the time of his death in Basingstoke as 12 March 1931, his age was 43.

Do you have a marriage cert for Denis ?

That would show the name and occupation of his father to get you started...

a possible match for the birth of Denis on the Irish BMD Index :

  Name: Denis A Hastings
  Registration district: Limerick
  Event type: Birth
  Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1931
  Mother's maiden name: Hughes
  Volume: 5 / Page: 279

The Limerick registration district covers the city and also parts of the surrounding county.

You can use these details to order a research cert, which will show date and place of birth, names of parents etc.

see :
   Introduction to Irish Records
   Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon
Details included on a Birth Cert

Thanks Shane

As you may have gathered I am new to this and dont understand how to trace my dads brothers and sisters.  It seems to be difficult to trace anything to do with Irish history.  Can you advise of where is best to start?

Thanks

It's best to work back step by step, so I'd start with the birth cert mentioned above as that will give you names for both his parents, which you would need to verify any possible siblings, and search further.

Do you already have a marriage cert for Denis ?
This will show his father's name and you can check this against the birth cert, when you get it, to verify that the details match up.

While you are waiting for the birth cert you could check the BMD Index on FamilySearch (see the introduction topic mentioned above) for other Hastings births in Limerick. Births on the index from the late 1920s include the mother's maiden name which should help locate siblings born after that date. Note that details of living people, or people who may be living, may not be posted on RootsChat.
