Bastardy records - Cupper
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 12:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have recently discovered that there is such a thing as bastardy records.
Does anyone know if there is any way to access bastardy records for Ombersley, Worcestershire online?
If not, would some soul be so kind as to do a look-up for me?

I am looking for the father of Florence Rose Cupper. She was born 20 Feb 1920 Hartlebury/Ombersley. She is the daughter of Rose Cupper, b. 18 Oct 1898, daughter of John and Florence Sarah Cupper.

I have no information as to who Florence's father is, other than a family legend that his last name was Green, but I have no proof of this.

Thanks,
CRodda.

Hi CRodda,

I'm not aware of on-line Bastardy Records for Ombersley, someone may correct me.  That would leave the Worcester Family History Centre http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/records/worcestershire-history-centre.aspx for a visit.

I think you would be very lucky to find one for the 1920's.  They were just totally impractical in the growing industrial  cities and towns.  As Workhouses were still around you may just find a record in their day book minutes.

The other place you might try, other than the birth certificate, would be the Baptism record.

Cheers

Cheers for that info Mike, I didn't know that they were much more rare in the 20's than previously.
I have both the birth certificate and baptism record, but both fail to list the name of the father. As for the Worcestershire Family History Centre, I live in Australia so that's not really a possibility for me.
Ah well, hopefully something will come up.

CRodda.

If the mother did not name the father either when registering the baby or christening the baby, then you are unlikely to find out who he is.

I wasnt aware that bastardy bonds existed as late as 1920.

You could email the Record Office as you cant get there to see if they hold any such records, then if they do, they may do a search for you at a fee?

Yeah, I wasn't holding out a lot of hope of finding anything, but I thought maybe if I could find a bastardy record there might be something. Seems not if they don't exist for this time, but ah well, that's nothing new.
Thanks for the tip about the registry office, I might do something along those lines.
