Boston Address Help Needed
« on: Monday 12 December 11 22:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've just received the birth certificate for my great grandmother Edith Bond who was born in Boston Lincolnshire in 1892.

The information on the certificate gives the place of birth as ...

6 Borland's Court Boston U.S.D

Her mother was Annie Bond a domestic servent who live at the same address.

Her father is not listed.

I've done census looks up on findmypast and ancestry but have not been able to locate 6 Borland's Court in any of the available census years.

Does anyone have information about 6 Borland's Court or know where I can find any information?

thanks in advance

Scott

Yards and Courts usually get their names from people who own (or owned)hous/shop/factory nearby.

Searching the 1891 census shows us that there was just one BORLAND family in Lincs ... and they were in Boston; he was from Scotland and a Draper.  When I discovered his address (14 Witham Place) and looked at it on Streetview http://tinyurl.com/bod2ayj it didn't look like a shop, so I thought he may have had one in town.

I then looked at www.historicaldirectories.org (1889 Lincs) and discovered he was a "Travelling Draper" so wouldn't have had a shop.  :-\

I then wondered if the court was shown on an old map and went to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=532471,344405 and selected (on right) 1889 1:500 Town Plan.  Towards the top right-hand corner of this map, you will see Borland's Yard.  In view of the rarity of the name BORLAND in Lincs, I think this is your place. :D

Notice that access to the yard was gained by a passage from a yard on Union Place.  That outer yard now has houses on.  There is at least one building still remaining that was in Borland's Yard http://tinyurl.com/c9u77on :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
