Philip's birth is well before the start of civil records, so you will need to check for church records - i.e. a baptism. Do you know what denomination this Darcy family were ?

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Hi Shane, thanks for our reply and link - I see you've been busy!  Philip was married in an  RC Church and all 11 children were baptised Catholic.

I will have a thorough look through your links and hopefully will learn something!

Johnnie

You could be lucky with RC records for Oldcastle, they go back further than most other Meath parishes - baptisms and marriages to the late 1780s. There are a few small gaps..

Films of the historic records for the parish are available in the National Library - the microfilm reference is Pos. 4188.

Transcripts for many Co. Meath parishes are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at : http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Excellent news - thank you very much - hopefully I can find some information on Phillips family and mine too!  I only recently found out Gt Granddad came from Ireland so this is an exciting period for me.

Fingers crossed !!

Thanks again - Johnnie

Ps.  My son is also Shane !!

...

do you have the occupation for Augustus from that marriage ?

in case you haven't come across it yet - Darcy is sometimes written as d'Arcy here...

it may not be clue - but can sometimes help if the occupation is location specific - e.g. rural or urban.  Certain occupations or trade can appear in directories e.g. grocers, blacksmiths etc - while labourers etc would probably not

There are some Darcy listings on Griffiths (c1854 for Meath) but no sign of an Augustus that I see...

  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Griffith's was a land taxation survey carried out between about 1847 and 1864, and lists many heads of household and details of the property the occupy.

Labourers - Philip and sons worked in a quarry/brick makers in Liverpool, but his daughter (my Grandmother was a midwife) - onwards and upwards !
