where is Derataith in co mayo
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 22:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I really hope someone can help me with this - it's driving me nuts!
I have just downloaded a marriage cert for gg grandparents.
Joseph Sammon and Bridget Mullowny 1870. I have quite a bit of info on Joseph's side and know he came from Drumbrastle Nr Newport - but I cannot find the address for Bridget Mullowny - her name is also listed as Mulroy on her childrens cert and Mulrooney in the family - so without a townland I cannot begin to put her side of the family together.
I have assumed that the townland would be nr Newport but I cant find anything that fits - I am assuming the name of the Townland has been transcribed wrongly or they had a problem reading it - any suggestions would help!
thanks in advance  :)

Googling 'Townlands in Mayo' will give you the entire list.   I looked under the 'D's and there isn't anything that remotely resembles Derataith, though.

Hello,

http://www.thecore.com/seanruad  is a good site for searching townlands. You need to look for Burrishoole civil parish - I used 'Der' as 'beginning' option and nearest I could see is Derrintaggart  :-\

You could also look for similar surnames in Griffiths Valuation for Burrishoole and any likely places.

It may not be Derrintaggart but it is only a short distance from Drumbrastle.

best wishes

thanks - i appreciate your info - I tried the same thing expecting to find it but I was really surprised when nothing matched - I was wondering if it was an irish language version of a Townland that is listed - really really frustrating, I downloaded the cert from an online site - maybe I should get the original cert to see if it has been wrongly transcribed -
thanks again for getting back to me - been banging my head against this one all day!!! :'(

The marriage cert from GRO may give more information and fathers' names.

Hi -
went back and checked griffiths specifically for derrintaggart - I was checking by the name before and it threw up to many possibilities and there they are! her father is Michael Mulrooney/Mullowny - living in Derrintaggart - right beside the McDonnells who are married into them -

I have wasted most of the day on this - I suspect I would still have been at it at xmas if you hadn't pointed Derrintaggart out to me!!!!

thanks a lot, really appreciated! :D

just a wee thought - looking at griffiths it says that the immediate lessor is Capt Wyndam - do you know if that means that Michael Mulrooney worked for him or sublet the house and buildings - we bit puzzled, all my previous entries were farmers - fairly straightforward .
thanks again for your help

It means that Captain Wyndam is the landlord and Michael rents the land etc from him.
There is more explanation here : Griffiths

also on several internet sites.

Michael would still be classed as a farmer or similar on certificates etc.
