Erskine Family
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 22:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Is there anyone doing research for the surname Erskine,  in the Liberton/Gilmerton areas of Edinburgh or Midlothian. I'm stuck on Hugh Erskine b. c1813, Cockpen, married to Margaret Hutton, they were married in Liberton. Hughs father could've been Thomas Erskine,b, c1796 Cockpen.

Cheers Iain

Hi Iain

Did Hugh not remain in Scotland to let you check his death cert? Last child for Hugh and Margaret shows as born in 1865.

Some online trees available to view via subs to A/try give his death as being in 1889 and his parents as Thomas Murray Erskine and Mary Hume.

The surname HUME certainly seemed to feature as a middle name for a few of their children, so maybe that could be the connection if these were Hugh's parents?

My ancestor Charles Hutton b 1818 in Musselburgh, died 1863 in Alloa, with Erskine listed as his mother, although his birth mother was Dobson. There may be some link given relatively scarce surnames and at same period.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in answering, been working away from home lately.
My great grandmother x3 was Margaret Hutton, born around 1813 not sure where. She was married to Hugh Erskine from Liberton in Edinburgh. Her father was Alexander Hutton and he was a shoemaker to trade, no more info on her though.
Don't know if there's a connection to your Hutton line.
