Electoral Roll Lookup Gorton 1910-1916
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for a look-up on the Electoral Roll for George Henry Furmston (B1880) for the years 1910-1916.
I know he was living at 45 Mayfield grove, Gorton in 1909 (when his wife died), but don't know where he lived until he was conscripted in 1916.

I'm trying the Electoral Roll as I can't seem to find him or his son on the 1911 census.

Many Thanks.

Hi David

The electoral registers are compiled by address, if he moved away from Mayfield Road you would need to know where he went, (unless he moved into a very small village and you check check the village without too many problems).

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for that.
The only other info we have (apart from the war graves site) is a newspaper cutting asking for information on George in 1919 after he had not returned from WW1 (we know now he died in 1918 as a POW). This gives an name and address as "Miss M Pritchard, 376 Worsley road, Winton". So i expect that this could be his next address after mayfield grove, but do not know when he moved or who Miss M Pritchard was?
The only other info i have is is his soon went and lived with hir aunt when he was constripted.

So the 2 address's for a lookup would be;
45 Mayfield road, Gorton &
376 Worsley road, Winton

Thanks & regards
David

Hi David,

The free search on the 1911 census shows a George "Furnston"  born c.1880, living in Salford (used the advanced search to do a 'Wildcard' search on surname F*ston).

Hope that helps,
 :) Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Thanks, but that is the wrong George (i used some credits and had a look at the "Salford" George a while ago).
The one i need seems very elusive between 1909 and 1916.
My George Henry Furmston was born in Gorton in June 1880, and was easy to find until 1909 (death of his wife, Sarah Ethel Greenhalgh), then he disappears from all records with his son George Kenyon Furmston.

Regards
David

Hi Carole,

Thanks, but yes i do have that info.

George Kenyon was my grandad and as he died so young (32) with my dad only 3, we know very little about his early years after the death of his mother in 1909.

Best I can do is, from the Guardian online newspaper archive: G K Furmston played cricket for Hulme Grammar School (now William Hulme's in Whalley Range).

But as this was in the 1920s (in various cricket results from 1920-1923), so later than the dates you are looking for  :'(  If there are archives for the school, they would probably just lead you to the aunt that you know about

The free 1911 index has a suspect George Sirenston that I think you should check out.  I just searched for all the George`s born Gorton 1880 plus or minus 2 years and looked for anyone with an "odd" surname that may have been a mistranscription of Furmston.
