Hello David
Don't know if this is a possibility:
www.historicaldirectories.org Slaters Street index for 1911 has a Henry FURMSTON shown as a newsagent at 13 Cross Street,Gorton.

The 1909 Slaters Trade directory as the same entry. I suppose it may fit in with your Mayfield address in 1909 if the shop was a lock up.
Route finder has Mayfield now in Denton but only a couple of miles up from Cross Street.
May be there could be other documents to look at in respect of the newsagents.
I once came across a website that listed all Cross Street shops, loads of them! I cannot remember the dates of the listing though.
I spent many hours being dragged up and down Cross Street as a kid as I used to live nearby. ;D
Hope this helps
Eric

I think Eric has solved your mystery.  If you use the Genes Reunited 1911 index - George Sirenston b 1880 has a birthplace of Gorton

There is also a George Sirenston born 1908 whose birthplace also shows as Gorton

Hi
Thanks to everyone for their time & effort.

It is the correct George. A very unusual transcription of the surname.... Sirenston

Henry was George's father.
The 1905 Godfrey map lists the 1905 Cross street traders.
On the "gorton local history group" site they have a list of Cross street traders from 1940. Which lists the shop still as being run by a "Mrs Furmston". (not sure which Mrs Furmston yet?).

George Kenyon Furmston, Had a scholarship to get to Hulme Grammar School, and did well there.

Regards
David

1929 directory says Mrs Eliza Furmston, newsagent, 13 Cross Street

Wanted to get something right!  ;D

In 1901, George H Furmstow, son of Henry and Eliza was living at 1 Johnson Street Gorton. Could he be one of your family?

Hi,

The 1929 directory is interesting as Henry died in 1927. Eliza must have taken over the shop, she died in 1940 aged 83! My father remembers going to visit the shop in the early 40's and it was run by 3 spinster sisters he thinks, so possibly Henry & Eliza's daughters (Annie, Nellie & Maggie) carried on running it after Eliza died, i think.

The family were at Johnson street until some time between 1901 & 1905 when Henry stopped working in the iron works and became a newsagent in cross street.
John buckland Furmston & James Furmston are correct and i "found" them the other night.

Thanks again
David
