William Howell
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 17:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate place and date of birth of William (John) Howell who was born in Kent about 1843 or 1844 and subsequently emigrated to New Zealand about 1856  where he married Agnes Jerome in 1864. He became a lieutenant in the Auckland Rifle volunteers and was a police man in 1871. He died in Auckland, New Zealand in February 1917

NZ marriage certs did not have father's name on them in 1864, that was not required until 1876 or 1880.

If qtonenz has William's death certificate, that should name both parents, providing the information was known by the informant.

The William that Victor found can possibly be ruled out as he is still in Croydon in 1861, with parents Thomas and Mary.

I'm a bit late to this.  I can tell you a little about Agnes.  She's the dau of Frank Jerome and Hannah Moor(e).  They married in the  Bay of Islands in the 1840's.  Agnes has 3 brothers, Frank (French)?,  Hamlin, and Alfred Edward.  All recorded in the Church records in the BoI, not on the official records.    Frank Jerome was either French or Portugese according to a note in a Ledger book held in the Auckland Library.  He was  Tailor by trade and when moved to Auckland had a business in High St. He and Hannah appear to have vanished from NZ.
Son Hamlin changed his name to Joseph Hamlin.  I think he married Margaret Paton.  Sorry don't have this info at my fingertips.
Hope this helps.
