Hello.

I am trying to trace information on my gg grandparents (above). They had 10 children, one being Samuel Wesley Edgar who died in France in the last days of WW1. Their eldest son (my g grandfather Edgar) was born about 1870 in either Co Monaghan or Armagh, but I have no first name for him. His grandfather was called James, so I'm assuming he might be called this too.

I am interested in finding out the name of Emily's parents and if she had any other siblings. I have no further information about where in Co Armagh she was born. She married Samuel Edgar and they lived in Co Monaghan. One of Samuel's siblings was born in Mullaghbawn, Co Armagh so it's likely to be in that area.

Any information on the McGowan family would be appreciated. I assume they were either CofI or Presbyterian.
Also if anyone can shed any light on my mysterious g grandfather: ? Edgar, that would be great.
Many thanks.  :)

Some extracted births from www.familysearch.org:
'female' Edgar born 11 Nov.1870 Armagh, Co.Armagh (page 34 in civil register)- parents Samuel Edgar & Emily McGowan.
'female' Edgar born 25 July 1876 Dublin St. [Monaghan town?] Co.Monaghan- same parents.
'male' Edgar born 25 Apr.1880 Co.Monaghan

If the eldest son was your great-grandfather- does birth certificate for any of his children not list father's name?

Looks like Emily Edgar (a widow) in 1901 census with some of her children:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Monaghan/Monaghan_Rural/The_Diamond/1639000
looks like Ann might be Emily's sister-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001156598/

Will of Samuel Edgar listed on www.proni.gov.uk- "Probate of the Will of Samuel Edgar late of Monaghan County Monaghan Flesher who died 17 August 1898 granted at Armagh to William Swan of Monaghan Auctioneer." Will mentions brother James Edgar "late of Flush Cottage County Armagh", son William James, son Samuel Wesley, son Thomas John, son David Wolsey, daughter Helena Maud, daughter Emily Margret, daughter Martha Jane, wife Emily.

Also, "Probate of the Will of Emily Edgar late of Monaghan County Monaghan Widow who died 28 May 1907 at Mullyloughran County Armagh granted at Armagh to Thomas Henry Reilly Professor of Music." Will mentions son David W.Edgar, son-in-law Thomas H. Reilly (executor), 4 sons (presumably including David), 3 daughters (Maud, Martha, Margaret).

Yes, "Probate of the Will of Anne Jane M'Gowan late of Monaghan County Monaghan Spinster who died 16 August 1903 granted at Armagh to Emily Edgar Widow." Will mentions sister Mrs. Emily Edgar and Emily's 3 daughters.

Marriage certificate for Samuel & Emily should list their fathers' names and occupations, etc.-
Samuel Edgar 1870 Armagh registration district volume 1 page 49- Emily McGowan on same page. Going by volume and page number marriage probably took place early in 1870 (and daughter born Nov.1870) probably eldest child).

Wow! Thanks for all this information and so quickly too. I did find the census return (above) but no information about my g grandfather. If only the census had been 20 years' earlier!
 :)

I have a real stumbling block on finding the name of my g grandfather. None of the names mentioned relate to him. He had a son(also called Samuel b 1890 in Co Monaghan) and my grandmother Jane Edgar born, I think, about 1900 in Co Monaghan.

I'm relatively inexperienced in searching the resources. I think I will have to pay to view some records on Ancestry to see if I can get a bit more information re: birth certificates and names.

Ancestry isn't actually the place to find Irish records such as you want. LDS (www.familysearch.org) and other free resources are probably better. There are two topic uncer Ireland Resources you should look at-

Will have another look and see if I can spot your great-grandfather anywhere.

Did your Samuel and brother Samuel stay in Ireland?

Closest I can find for Samuel in 1911 census is this one- but not sure if it is the correct one and can't find this same Samuel in 1901 census:
