I have heard good and bad reports about Ancestry.com. I am trying to trace ancestors in the USA and I am wondering if ancestry.co.uk is the best site to use. Does anyone have any experience of the site

I am using the site now and I have No clue what i am doing!!! I have come pretty far and it has helped me a great deal and being on rootschat as well. I am just having 1 problem locating my great grandmother's maiden name and don't know how to go about that. Aside from that I like it!

Try out the ancestry library edition, available at a good number of public libraries for free.   .Co.UK doesn't necessarily  include access to most US databases. for that You need a 'world' subscription.
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Definitely sign up for the World Edition as it incorporates all.

Not to sound like a shill but I wouldn't be anywhere without Ancestry.

If you are only tracing American ancestors then it makes no sense to have the World subscription - just take out the US subscription. Of course, if you get far enough back you may need to expand to the world subscription.

But before you take out any subscription, do the 14 day free trial. That way you can get a feel for the site and decide if you want to spend your money there. If you decide no, just make sure you cancel within the 14 days.

I also recommend checking if your local library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition (most do). That may be sufficient for you if you have easy access to the library.

Ancestry certainly has the best coverage of the USA, of all the pay sites that I've looked at.
