Thanks again. No, no access currently but I'm more than willing to recompense you for your credits expense.
Maybe that topic should be kept to pms?

I've updated the heading.

I have fairly free access to the census information (except 1911)  and some BMDs so don't need recompense.

I'll concentrate on Effie's family first and then go on to Murdo's.

Effie's parents, Malcolm McGregor and Christina McLeod, married in Carloway on 17 March 1870. This from the IGI - I've not looked at the full cert.

In 1881 the family are still  in Tolsta

Fisherman's House, Tolsta Chaolais,Carloway

Malcolm Mcgregor, 42, fisherman
Chirsty, 38
Mary, 10
Heny, 9  (I think this is Effie)
Donald, 6
Malcolm, 4
John, 2
Norman, 9 mths
All born  Tolsta, Uig

By 1891 Effie/Henny/Euphemia/Henrietta is a Domestic Servant in Stornoway in the household of Neil MacCallum, a general merchant, and family

14 Francis Street, Stornoway
........
Euphemia MacGregor, 18, serv-  domestic, b. Carloway Lochs

This is the most likely entry for Effie in 1901:

Somersdale, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire
Thomas Bell, 35, mechanical engineer, b. India (British subject)
Helen, w, 34, b. Glasgoe
Effie Mcgregor, 28, general servant (domestic), b. Stornoway

(Effie and Murdo married in June 1901, Partick- information you already have)

1911
16 George Street, Partick
Murdo McLeod, 36, shipwright, b. Ross-shire, Lewis
Effie, w, 38 (married 10 years, 5 children, all alive), b. -do-
Murdo,s, 9
Malcolm, s,7
Annabelle, d,5
Norman, s, 7 mths
Isabella, d, 7 mths
Isabella, visitor, 16. b. Ross-shire, Lewis
Children all b. Glasgow

From 1870 marriage~

Christina McGregor m.s.  McLeod's parents were Neil McLeod, tenant and Catherine McDonald

Wow!  What a load! Thanks seem wholly inadequate for all the work you are doing.
Funny thing too is that I saw mention of Old Kilpatrick - I was in 'digs' there many many moons ago whilst working in Clydebank.

Silly as it may be but I was in that area last year on holiday (staying in Scalpay).

If you go to Freecen (http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ) and select 1841,  Ross and Cromarty and enter Neil McLeod, b. 1820 (he underestimated his age, I think), the family will come up in Tolstachulish. You can then take a virtual stroll round the township and see if there are any likely kin.
