Murdo MacLeod & Effie Macgregor - Isle of Lewis
« on: Tuesday 06 December 11 15:03 GMT (UK) »
(Posted for a friend)

Norman MacLeod was a crofter and fisherman from near Stornoway and Gran was Effie Macgregor with a croft at Tolsta Chaolais near Callanish. They moved to Glasgow for work about 1900.

This is all I have immediately so any help much appreciated, backwards, forwards or sideways.

Thanks,

James.

Hi

This might be then in 1891 but maybe a little old  :-\

17 Portroller?, Stornoway

Norman Macleod, 50, fisherman
Effie, 49
Mary, 15, general servant
John 14
Effie, 8
Kenneth, 12
Malcolm, 4

All b. Stornoway

Does your friend  have any children's names. McLeod is a  pretty common surname in Lewis.

gnu, thanks though I have no idea as yet (as I said earlier) this is all I have immediately. I will have to try harder to winkle out some more details if possible.

Thanks again.

All surmise right this minute but, perhaps the 1900 is elastic?

I've been trying to pinpoint Effie (Euphemia) but can't get a definite hit around Callanish (parish of Uig)

This could be the Norman that I found in 1891-1901,  in 1881 with a different wife. The elder children's names and ages match

21 Portroller Road, Stornoway

Norman McLeod, 36, fisherman
Henrietta, 36
Mary, 5
John, 4
Kenneth, 2
All b. Stornoway

Thanks again.

Do you suppose Tolsta Chaolais would be a point for registration or would it need to be Callanish?

As given to me, there was nothing stated (it may have been implied) that the two were married.

I appreciate that MacLeod (and variant spellings) is a very popular surname.

Hi

Tolsta Chaolais is fairly close to Callanish and they were in the parish/district of Uig,  so that registration would be where the registrar was located - I would say probably Carloway.

Here's a modern map to show it's location ~

I checked all of Scotland for a marriage but nothing is coming up. i think you'll need more information from your friend - for example how is she/he related to them. There must be some link ancestor that more is known about.

Hullo,

All I can say at present is that my informant is a grandchild. Add to that I'm in Scotland, he isn't :)
Fun huh? ;D

Many thanks.
