So far it only says  Hildrith is Mulatto (mixed race) on once census form.
I guess whoever filled in the census form either knew something about his history or just worked it out if he was a slightly lighter colour than his neighbours.
you would have to go right back to find out more, possibly to slavery times.
Hildrith's name is a real mix and I was mislead a few times. There is a place called Hildreth near Salem so the name appears to be quite common in that area  ???  Gross is a Germanic name which I'm not convinced is his correct name.  Many German farmers headed for New Jersey so he may well have taken up a new name there.

I don't envy you your search, its going to be hard

I think it would be worth your while trying to obtain the birth certificate for your grandfather James if you don't have a copy already.  It should give the full name of his mother and hopefully father.
If Hildrith did have a first marriage it would have had to take place betwen 1910 and 1911 and likely to have been in Salem co, possibly Mannington.
Perhaps you could also ask for a search for a marriage certificate, unfortunately I'm not finding anything online at the moment.

sorry, please ignore the message about the adopted daughter Della M Porter born 1911 I was trying to find a lead at the time.

In 1930, Hildrith Gross and Della have her sister staying with them, a Mrs Hannah V Thomas.  As I couldn't find anything on Della, I looked for a Hannah V living in Mannington.  As you can see from the family, she indeed had a sister called Della born in the right year, but also a brother called Oakford... I would assume your grandfather's younger brother was named after him.

So second wife had a surname of Wilson, the only way of finding anything on your grandfather James is to buy some certificates as his mother doesn't appear with him in any of the census.

hi again epighany,

Do you have the marriage cert for Dorethea Anderson-Gross and David Anderson? This will give you her father's name then it might be possible to trace his marriage to Cora, if they married.
We can then trace them through the US fed census up to the latest census available (1930), bearing in mind that unfortunately the 1890 census was mostly destroyed.

When posting a request please add the place they were born and where you expected them roughly live. It helps RC helpers enormously in the search!

I'm not sure if you know, but the US BMD (vital) records work in a different way to ones we have here in England.  In England, after registering a BMD in the local registrars office, the data is then collected in a central deposit which we call the GRO. We can then apply to the GRO for a copy of the relevant cert.
In America and Canada, each state has its own vital records office (you can find it by googling the state or town  +  vital records).  They are not centralised anywhere and there are no indexes published on the web :(  Once you have an approximate date and place, you apply to the state vital records office.  I believe you were given the link earlier in this thread for the one you were looking for.
www.familysearch.org has some baptismal/marriage/burial records but it does depend on the religious denomination on what is held and each state varies on how much data is on familysearch.

I'm confused

You said earlier, your grandfather was called James E Gross born c1911 NJ

You now have a grandmother called Dorethea Anderson-Gross born 1876, who married a David Anderson c1890?  Having found James and his family through 1900-1930 I can't see the names Dorethea anywhere.  I think I am missing something somewhere  ???
