The attached is a photo of part of a report I have just produced in Legacy, the free version. (
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/). There are many interesting reports to choose from and with them you can create pdf files, html files, text files, or just print to paper.
Becoming more adventurous, you can publish a block of information to an htm/l web "site" that you could then upload to free or paid for web space you take. Ancestry allows you to have a free web site as well as publishing a tree. Click on the globe underneath the shield in my posting to see the beginnings of our web site and then click on the link below the photos to the Rootsweb tree.
Even more adventurous, the paid version of Legacy allows you to create very informative charts which you could then publish in your web site.
Even better still, Legacy, like all the other Family Tree (FT) programmes allows you to publish files called gedcoms. These contain all the information in your tree (except that part which you choose to remain private or not even included at all) and can be used by other people with the same or a different FT programme to yours in order to see your tree in all its glory.
You can even upload your gedcom to Ancestry in order to quickly create and later update your tree online. See the 2nd paragraph above.
Searching for more ancestors: Legacy like other similar programmes allows you to make searches on the web directly from a name you have already included in your tree. You want to see all the phone numbers someone had, or all their census information, then it is easy to find. Once found you can then download the information to your computer or attach the documents directly to the people in your Ancestry tree. (I don't like or use this last possibility as I prefer to have everything on my pc and then upload which docs I want to be attached)
Getting started with Legacy or other FT programmes is simplicity itself. Enter the first person you fancy, male or female, add a spouse (linking them together as prompted), add grans and children, 2nd spouses, lovers and children the other side of the blanket and away you go... As long as you make the correct link your tree will be fine. And of course, you include all the census data in either the individual notes or the events boxes so it will be published. Experiment with a few people before doing the lot.
