Coxey Family of Bunbury

Can anyone help me with the birth of Richard Coxey in about 1797.  It is possible that he was born in the vicinity of Bunbury.  He went on to marry Hannah Clegg in 1826 in Manchester Cathedral but the marriage bond was registered in Cheshire.  However, I know nothing about him before 1826.

WarrenB - in 1826 IIRC Manchester was still in the Diocese of Chester (hence wills of this period were proved at Chester) - it didn't become a separate diocese until later; hence any marriage bond would be Chester. I can see on the new FamilySearch site that there does seem to be a Coxey family associated with Bunbury.

I note that the age given on FamilySearch for both parties is 21 - often that is "shorthand" for 21 or over - ie if full legal age. As you've given his estimated birth of 1797 have you found them in the census or elsewhere to arrive at that year? There is a baptism at Bunbury for a Richard on 8 Jan 1797, father John (seems to be one of those registers that didn't name mothers).

Thanks for the reply.  Richard was married to Hannah in 1826 but I believe she died in 1829 about the time she gave birth to their third child.  Richard then married Martha Wilkinson in 1831 and appears in the 1841 census aged 45 (the rounded age used in that census).  Hence my guess at his birth year.  I believe he died in 1845 but I don't have his death certificate.

Thanks - I've found him in Heaton Norris, so if 45 was correct (ie 45-49) his birth would be c 1792-1796. FamilySearch has a burial at Cheadle, Cheshire of a 49 year old Richard Coxey on 23rd March 1845 ie birth 1794-1795 so a fair chance of being the same person. CheshireBMD has the death in Heaton Norris sub-district but age 51! His age seems somewhat elastic.

It's such an uncommon name that I feel that the 1797 baptism is him - I'd check the others with the same name on the early census against FamilySearch to have a stronger degree of probability and there are always people who weren't baptised or for whom the records are not currently online, but if you can eliminate the others I'd go with 1797 Bunbury.

I've been looking at Family Search this afternoon and there is a long line of John and James Coxeys in Baddiley (just a few miles from Bunbury) going back to 1721.  There are births, marriages and deaths so I think I will have to draw a tree and try and make some sort of sense of it.  Thanks for your help.  By the way, many of my ancestors seem to have had elastic ages!

I agree.  I also think his mother was Mary Armstrong who died/ was buried on 12 Jan 1807.  She was married on 23 Jan 1785.   I have found 6 siblings for Richard including a younger brother John.  However, I have a number of candidates for Richard's grandfather!.   Interestingly, there are still Coxeys in Bunbury and a Coxey Green farm.  I have another relative in the mid 1800s called James Green Coxey and I never understood where the Green came from.  Perhaps I need a trip to Bunbury churchyard to look at the old headstones.
