I know I`m 4 years behind according to the date on the last post about this topic but I thought I`d try anyway.  Is anyone any further forward in finding Millicent Adeline ?  She was my 2nd cousin twice removed (from the Boulton side of the family)

Dave

Hi Dave,
I haven't found out anymore about Millicent Adeline, I tried contacting the Isle of Man probate dept regarding her mothers will but they didn't reply. My grandmother Rachael Adeline was Millicent's aunt, who are you related to on the Boulton side, I have been trying to find my grandmother on the 1911 census I know that she had an acrimonious divorce at that time, but is not on the census under her maiden name or previous married name and neither is my father Harry Behn, his brother Leslie Thomas is staying with Millicent and her mother on the Isle of Man

Hi, Rachel Adeline was my 1st cousin 3 x removed,  our lines split from William Boulton born about 1804.  I am descended from his son William born 1826.  I searched for Millicent Adeline`s marriage/death in the manxbmd.com site with no records coming up but when I typed in 'Millicent Sherratt' into a search on  http://www.newspapers.gov.im/ there is a record in the births, marriages & deaths section of the Isle of Man Examiner of the 1st January 1954.  Unfortunately it`s a subscription site, so you can`t view it until you have subscribed (and paid, presumably)  Are you on Ancestry ?  I`m linked with 6 other trees researching the Boulton`s.  Thanks for replying.  Dave.

I have put a request on Isle of Man site in case anyone is visiting the IMuseum reading room who may look up the newspaper. When I looked at the site I got the impression the charges were for visiting the site. I am on ancestry but haven't a membership at present but the family tree is loaded under the name of Brett

Hopefully someone will access the newspaper sooner rather than later.   Like you, I can`t find your grandmother or father on the 1911 census,  if she was a follower of the suffragette movement, there`s a chance that she refused to take part.  Apparently there were a great number of women who did this and as you say, a messy divorce going on according to the documents available.
I am linked to your tree on Ancestry. If your father is Harry Behn(Shawcross), you must be Judith, which makes us 3rd cousins.

That right. I have some copies of the divorce from the national archives made very interesting reading. Do you have any information about Joseph Boultons wife Priscilla Goodwin and her family, I haven't been able to go any further back than Priscilla on that branch of the family

I only have Priscilla`s father`s name (Thomas) from the marriage records on familysearch.org  Familysearch.org Ref: Source Film No. 1517617, 497355, 497356, 873648, 96896.  One of the things that I want to do when I retire is to start travelling around to various church`s etc to try & access old parish records.  I know the Salt Library in Stafford has a lot of parish records but all on Microfiche !!  I got your message about the newspaper entry, back to the drawing board !!  I put a request on the facebook page 'UK Genealogy' to see if anyone on there could help, I`m getting a couple of pointers.  There is an 'Isle of Man Family History Society', also Braddan parish Commissioners on  www.braddan.im  and an e-mail address,  lonancommisioners@manx.net  It`s something to go on at least.

Priscilla also had a brother William, born about 1804 in Shelton(Hanley) who she is staying with in the 1871 census.  It states he is a Pottery Warehouseman(Packer).  Looking back at previous censuses, it looks like he was married to an Elizabeth.  There are a lot of William Goodwin`s so trying to get the right one is tricky.

After failing to find a Sherratt death in 1953/4 on ManxBMD, I visited the Manx Museum today.
Checking the microfiche of Births, Marriages and Deaths (Manx equivalent of GRO indexes) nothing came up there either!

So I checked that newspaper article - it was a Births announcement! ;D
Son, born 26th December 1953 to Eileen & Joe Sherratt.
(The birth is on Manx BMD - won't mention the name, as he's younger than me and probably still alive!)

The reason for the "hit" was the Sherratt birth announcement, coupled with a death announcement of Millicent Ronan on the same page! ::)

No Manx link that I can see?

Incidentally, the Manx Newspapers can be seen online - just a small fee to pay! ;D
