Is there a Probate Office in Cardiff?
« on: Monday 28 November 11 09:27 GMT (UK) »

I have several Swansea Wills from the 1940's that I want to order.

The main Probate Office in York seems to take a long time, as I gather they have a large backlog.

Is it possible to order them from Cardiff instead, - does anyone know?

Cheers, Romilly.

Hi Romilly,
Yes, there is a Probate Office in Cardiff, although I do not know whether you can order wills from there.  The address for Cardiff is:
Cardiff Probate Registry Office, 3rd Floor Cardiff Magistrates Court, Fitzalan Place, Cardiff South Wales, Wales CF24 0RZ
Tel. No: 02920 474373
I hope this is of some help to you.
Good Luck.
Kind Regards
Lainey

Many thanks for the info Lainey.

I'm guessing that they will have less of a backlog than York. I just wasn't sure whether York is the only place to get copies of Wills going back as far as the 1940's.

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Romilly

I haven't ordered from Cardiff (yet), but I have ordered from Bodmin, so you can get from other offices. They ask for a letter with cheque, name of person, last address & date - all things that show in the probate index.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi

If you are sending for a will you apply to Leeds now, not York, and the cost is 6 GBP

Postal Searches and Copies Department
Leeds District Probate Registry
York House
York Place
Leeds
LS1 2BA

Please provide the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, stating what you require and enclosing the appropriate fee which is £6 for the first copy and £1 for every additional copy .

I believe that you can apply at any office but that applications are forwarded to Leeds. The possible exception might be applying in person at London. It might be worth checking at Cardiff if that is the case

Andy

I use the probate office in Bristol. If you sent a letter and a cheque for £6 payable to HMCTS, giving full name, place and date of death and date of will if known they will sent it on to you. I get the replies within a week, for wills that I request from any part of the country, so it is quite fast.
If you go in person they ask you to complete a form and this goes into the system.I have found that this takes the same time to get a reply as posting the request.
Hope this helps
Jane
