Chryston
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 08:45 GMT (UK) »
It would appear that many of my relatives were living in Chryston for several generations. In the late 1950s I spent a couple of summer holidays there staying with my Grandmother Agnes Neilson. My recollections are somewhat hazy now but I recall she lived in a house on the main street that must have been quite old, with a large garden out the back with what must have been a vehicle ramp and chickens. Attached to the house, but not hers, was a dairy and a few doors along to the left was a small store. I think the dairy was attached to a farmstead as there were a couple of bullocks there, one named after me.....Would be great if anyone could fill in any details for me of the place at the time, and any pictures of the area?

This picture shows Main Street, Chryston in the 1950's.   The small house across the street from the church was at that time a Post Office and local General store.  The owners lived in the other side.
Many of the small older houses, on the Church side, and the length of Main street had, and still do have large properties.

Thanks for that, nothing on it jogs my memories at all I'm afraid. My recollection is a bit vague I guess. I recall crossing the road once and getting into some sort of park/woodland. I also recall a long walk with my Mother where we headed directly down a road opposite a shop and did a circle through some country roads over several miles......

Roger - why not go to Google maps and go for a wander around Chryston with the wee yellow man?

Hopefully, you might see things you recognise.

I did have a look a while back, it seemed to have been significantly 'modernised'....... Lol.

That was the aerial view, maybe a virtual walk is an idea, will take your advice.

Indeed and its amazing how the memory works, suddenly I had the address in my head! Here is the house. Its been changed ab lt but the outline remains the same. My Grandmother lived on the left hand side, the upside down L shape was the main house with the kitchen bathroom out the back of the L. The grass at the rear was a platform that led to a makeshift vehicle inspection 'pit'. The archway is where the vans loaded up I assume. The grassed area to the right rear was a farmyard, that's 121 MainStreet Chryston!

Brilliant.

Great stuff!

I'm glad my suggestion worked - it's amazing sometimes what jumps out of your memory banks!!
