Well firstly thank you all so much for your prompt responses and the information CaroleW, Sharon01 and Ian. I had looked before (clearly not hard enough)  and not been able to find anything, which I now know is due to the change of surname from Schiff to Skiff.  I have now found a very large amount of information.

I have one more question to ask, to save me from going in the wrong direction. I thought that Sophy Child's was born in 1872 and her parents were Robert and Mary A Childs. However, on the record of her marriage to Francis J Skiff it says that she was born in1870 and her fathers name was Henry. Can someone please point me in the right direction with Sophy.

Oh and just one more question. You have kindly told me that Saling Schiff was born Wolstein, Prussia.  Where is Wolstein? I have found a Holstein in Germany and a Holsten  in Switzerland.  Thank you.

Have found on line tree shows a picture of headstone in West Ham Jewish Cemetery Buckingham Road of a Saling Schiff died 8/10/1887 also say's Mr Shalom bar Avrahom - it is all in hebrew.

Other information shows born c.1822 Holsten Lower Saxony Germany.

Have you checked the 1881 census for her

Thank you very much Jennifer. I have found Jewish website with the headstone that you refer to and there is an abundance of information on there. Particularly for Katherine Schiff nee Mosely. I can now try and find out who Saling's parents were.

Thank you very much Carole. I am fairly sure that I have found the right Sophia Childs born in Clapton in 1872  - as other family trees I have seen match with this.  However the reference to a Henry being her father on her marriage records has confused me, along with her year of birth changing to 1870. She married Francis J Schiff (Skiff) in St Martin in the Field.

Clapton is not in Essex and that's where Sophy says she was born on the 1901 and 1911 census (as per GRU)

1881 shows parents as Robert & Mary A - not Henry

as other family trees I have seen match with this

Always be cautious when using info obtained by other researchers about the same FH.

There is only one Sophia Childs born in Essex around that time.

Sophia Childs Sep 1869 West Ham (vol 4a page 62).

Might be worth looking into.
