Was Alfred Green in the army
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 12:16 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Alfred Green born 1854/1933 to Robert Green and Eliza Downing in
Chippenham, Cambridgeshire He went missing between 1871 /1881 and I think that he may have been in the army as in the 1871 census there is an Alfred Green in a London barracks how do I find out or dose someone know . Thank you so much Tom.

You need to look in WO97, the pre 1913 discharges, on find my past...It will have  birth and marriage details on his attestation sheets
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

hi ts
i,ve had a look in FindMyPast service/pension records for alfred but no luck on that front so i looked to find the census record you speak of and found this entry for an alfred green born chippenham in st georges barracks , trafalgar sq , by going back page by page it appears that the regiment is the coldstream guards as the first entry is for an  hon orville nugent lieut in the coldstream guards so i,m presuming they all are coldstream guardsmen but don,t hold me to it , [ scrimnet what would be your thinking on this please ].
now in the 1881 cen is that your alfred and his wife susan living in lancs ?.
regards
trevor

There are two Alfred Greens born 1854 in chippenham one to a David Green not mine and my Alfred born to Robert Green and Eliza Downing Chippenham  so I assume that the 1871 as a solder is my Alfred as the other one is still at home with his parents .
now in the 1881 he is up here in the north of England in Rawtenstall Lancashire with just his wife Susan Howlett married in 1876  plus a son  name George 1874 ?? Born in Chippenham or so it says ? But not on the 81Census.
I also found the second Alfred in the 1881 Census and he is a Domestic servant in Chelsea London  for a captain in the Royal Horse guards name of Kilmarnock .
So I have to say it looks like the  one in the coldstream guards is my Alfred   or is it ?

Thanks trevor
