Alexander Muirhead
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the Kirk Session Minutes for Cambusnethan??  The library advised me to check them but as I'm unable to go to Edinburgh o check this out.
I'm trying to find a birth for my Great Grandfather, Alexander or Sandy Muirhead.  He was born c. 1853 in Cambusnathen according to the 1861 Census.  His parents were Thomas Muirhead and Margaret Black.  I.m unable to find his birth anywhere.  I've tried Scotlands People and been down to Edinburgh Register House but no record for him..

Deeply indebted to anyone who can help.

Evelyn

Hi Evelyn and Sue  :)

The 1853 entry for Alexander on IGI at www.familysearch.org is a member submitted entry, as are the entries for siblings Thomas in 1851 and John in 1854.

The main entries which can be verified are from the statutory registers following the start of official registration in 1855. No entries show on the pre 1855 Old Parish Registers unfortunately.

The births may have been unregistered or the family belonged to a different denomination than the established Church of Scotland, ie, presbyterian.

The Free Church and other dissenting Presbyterian churches was quite strong in that area and maintained their own records which are unfortunately not available online. The LDS were able to copy some of the records but not all of the churches made access available.

PS there are several Muirheads mentioned in the Cambusnethan Monumental Inscriptions but your names do not appear to be amongst them.

I can't help with the birth records I'm afraid but here are some of the burial record extracts from the Day Books for the old churchyard at Cambusnethan. All dates are of internment and in all cases the burial was in the churchyard, not the cemetery.

MARGARET MUIRHEAD, Gillhead, aged 14 months.
Parents - Thomas Muirhead and Margaret Black.
19th December 1860.

THOMAS MUIRHEAD, miller, Gillhead, aged 83 years, widower.
Parents - John Muirhead & Margaret Baillie.
24th October 1862.

MARGARET MUIRHEAD, housewife, Gillhead, aged 42 years, married.
Parents - Alexander Black & Jane Russell.
4th May 1863.

THOMAS MUIRHEAD, baker, Gillhead, aged 23 years (No marital stutus recorded).
Parents - Thomas Muirhead & Margaret Black.
1st April 1874.

Not sure if the Thomas who died in 1862 is a relation but it looks as though he could be.

The plot books have no information prior to about 1875, so unless you know of a later death I can't tie these in to a specific plot in the churchyard, I checked the monumental inscriptions for Muirhead & Black and for Muirhead & Baillie but no luck.

Dear All

Many thanks for your help and info for Muirheads and you've helped me greatly, especially Lodge, who has filled  in a few blanks.

I think you helped me before RE: Cambusnethan Churchyard.

Been away and missed the post but I have a few registrations on this family. Alex's birth doesn't exist but then there are gaps and missing records from this era. If you wish copies of what I have send a pm.

Alex did in fact die in 1931 in Carluke. His mother in 1863 as noted, she was the daughter of Alex Black and Jane Russell. His father died in Ayr in 1890 and his mother was also a Russell.  I also have his brother Thomas and a perhaps a few more on file.

I think this is them in the plot book for the old churchyard.

The owners, in Victorian times, were Thomas Muirhead and Margaret Russell.

In the south lair -

MARY MUIRHEAD, aged 71 years, 29th March 1884.
JEANIE MUIRHEAD, aged 28 years, 6th February 1885.
WILLIAM MUIRHEAD, aged 64 years, 29th November 1892.

In the centre lair -

THOMAS MUIRHEAD, aged 75 years, 8th July 1890.
JANET McGLONE, aged 92 years, 28th September 1901.

In the north lair -

WILLIAM RUSSELL, aged 62 years, 17th December 1886.
- - - - -  MUIRHEAD, no age stated, 5th November 1897.
AGNES E. MUIRHEAD, aged 3 months, 24th March 1891.

All dates are of internment. The one without a Christian name may well be a still birth.

There used to be a small marker stone at this plot, not sure if it has survived, it was there in 1983!
The inscription on it - "1825 Erected by Thomas Muirhead and Margaret Russell".
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.
