A neighbour recognised the painting from a book he owns - 'Borders and Berwick' -  I think by Charles Strang.

What a stroke of luck.  :)

Afraid not.  It's been demolished for some time.
Hibee

If this is the same Stobs Castle, it was apparently there in 2008:

And looking at google maps, there is a substantial building on the site. Unfortunately the B6399 is the closest street view you can get - roads nearer the bulding have not been filmed by the google truck.  ;) Beautiful countryside.

To confirm if the house still exists, as well as who lives there, you might like to contact RCAHMS:

There is an online enquiry form via the 'contact' link at the very bottom of the page.

Let us know if you discover anything more about the place.

Good morning,

Stobs castle is definately still there, changed considerably from the painting though. As pointed out you can't see it on street view but if you go on google earth, put in stobs castle it will take you to the middle of a field. Stay on aerial view, scan left and zoom in and it is sitting in a hollow to the left of the bend in the road. You can then use the control to take an oblique view from any angle you desire.

Glad to have this confirmed John. I thought I must be imagining it when I saw the house sitting there on google maps.

I'll be interested to know what it is used for these days (it is in the middle of nowhere so surely can't be an old people's home or split into 'apartments'?  :().
