Marriage Look Up Please - St Mary's - in St Helens 1854
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 13:37 GMT (UK) »
hiYall

I have found the marriage of my 3 x great grandparents Elizabeth Anders & Thomas Mather on the LDS site, details as follows:

29th October 1854 Marriage at St Mary's Church, (Now renamed St Helen's) St Helens, Lancashire: Thomas Mather, aged 25, Bachelor, Father Thomas Mather: Elizabeth Mather, aged 20, Spinster, Father William Anders: Source LDS: Index No: M03666-4 Film No: 1469037:

If anyone has access to the actual parish register - I am trying to find the occupation of Thomas Mather senior and any named witnesses as there are several possibilities and I have the added obstacle of Thomas junior changing both his place of birth and age throughout the census  :-\

All help gratefully appreciated!
Cheers

Hi Radcliff

Thanks for the suggestion - I have this already but I'm not sure whether this is my Thomas or not - mainly because all the census after his marriage in 1854 has him as being born c1830 in 1861, c1829 in 1871, c1827 in 1881 - His burial 14 Jan 1891 has him at aged 61 - which could link him to the Thomas in your baptism.  However, Thomas & Catherine's son Thomas was born c1833 in 1841, c1832 in 1851 - I am wondering whether the one baptized 1830 died and they had another son named Thomas a couple of years later.

My Thomas also lists his place of birth as Rainford in 1861 & 1881,  Windle in 1871  - the one with Thomas & Catherine in 1851 is listed as born in Windle and in the 1841 census they are in the hamlet of Hardshaw which is close to both Rainford and Windle.  Problem is that there are several Mather families in the area  ::)  I have put Thomas as the son of Thomas & Catherine in my tree as he also has a daughter named Catherine - perhaps after his mother?

So........... If the parish register lists his father as a gardener or the witnesses link to siblings then I know that Thomas & Catherine are the correct parents - thanks for your help  :-*
Cheers

The 1861 census records a Sarah Mather a boarder with Thomas and his wife she is aged 21.

The 1841 census for Thomas and Catherine records Mary 15, Henry 13, Catherine 10 Thomas 8 Samuel 5 and SARAH 1
Thomas is a gardener.

As far as I am aware you would need to visit either Lancashire Record Office or St Helens Library Archive to see the register for St Mary's formerly St Helens church at St Helens.
