She married Edward R Charters in Hackney in 1939 and her daughter says that she was Kathleen E Dempsey from Rathdowney, Kilkenney but that is all that is known.

Parts of Co. Kilkenny would be quite close to Rathdowney - i.e. Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny is less than 15km south of Rathdowney , adn there are a number of townlands closer then this.

Do you have details of Kathleen's father from the marriage record ?

Using his name and occupation you might be able to find him on the Irish 1911 census.

Rathdowney (Co. Laois) is in the registration district of Donaghmore, and the adjacent area to the south in Co. Kilkenny is the registration district of Urlingford.

I dont see any likely births around 1913 in those districts for a Kathleen/Catherine Dempsey.. see : Kathleen Dempsey 1912-1914

The district of Thurles (Co. Tipperary) would be quite close to the west and might be worth checking ..

In 1911 census would there  be Kathleen E Dempsey as the name Kathleen E is also one of the mothers name and then her child.

I dont see any likely Kathleen Dempsey's on the 1911 census near to the right area - none in Co. Kilkenny, and just one in Co. Laois - but quite a distance from Rathdowney.

Middle initials dont always get recorded on census returns or the BMD Index, and Kathleen snr could also be listed on the census as just 'Kate'. There are two Kate Dempsey's on the 1911 in Co. Kilkenny, but both are single.

I'd start with a marriage cert to determine the name and occupation of Kathleen's father. This could help find him on the 1911 return and maybe with wife and older siblings of Kathleen jnr.
