Death of Frank NEWTON/BRENHAM before 1915

Hi

Wondered if anyone could look for the death of a Frank Newton or Brenham. Unsure of surname because on 1891 census was listed as Francis W Brenham but on the 1901 census was married and living in Heavistree surname Newton.

This is the 1891 entry living at 56 Cowick Street, Exeter St. Thomas

Emily had a child out of wedlock in 1898 called Mary Ann bn Exeter St. Thomas she was put in a home for "girls of this sort"! However she had had no choice in this little matter. There was no name on the birth cert but when Mary Ann (Polly) died in 1915 the father was named as Frank Brenham (deceased), draper's shop walker. Emily always maintained that it was her half brother. This would not be quite true if he was the father as he was her step-brother and no blood relation but the 1891 census entry may account for why she used Brenham on the death cert. Francis Newton was the son of John Newton (deceased) and Caroline Eliza nee Moxey.
The only other Frank Brenham I can find was bn in St. Thomas in 1885 a tad young to have been involved perhaps. Can find no death for him either and no entry on 1901 only entry for a Frank Brenham is an error and takes you to Francis Swabey living next door to Caroline Eliza Brenham!

I have been browsing without success looking for your Frank. I notice in 1881, he is listed as Francis Edwin - so started searching for Edwins as well. I can find no trace of him in 1901, which makes one wonder if he perhaps left the country and Emily was told that he had died? alternatively he may have died before 1901. Sorry I haven't been of much help

Have just noticed an Edwin Newton - aged 24 in 1901 (wife is older) listed as Jeweller's Manager  Born Exeter, living in Yorkshire RG13/4251  127 p. 37  - I'll see if I can find a marriage

Thanks for taking the time to look.

I have found Francis on the 1901 census in Heavitree living at 37 Newcombe Street with his wife Jessie. They married in 1900 and it is registered in Crediton the place that Jessie was born. Really need 1911 census now!!!
I wondered whether he went to the first world war and was killed early on. I don't know if their deaths were registered here if that was the case. Finding his death would prove one way or the other if he was Mary Ann's father.

Emily at this time was still living at 11 Friars Walk in a women's refuge described as inmate and domestic servant. Her daughter was living with with a family at 1 St. Andrew's Cottage and is described as a nurse child. Mary Ann (Polly) died in 1915, she was "reclaimed" by my grandmother and was living with her and my great grandfather Daniel Smith. Polly was an epileptic and was admitted into Hull infirmary where the staff left her in the bath where she fitted and died. About six weeks before this Emily and Daniel lost their daughter Eveline aged 5 to diphtheria and my Grandmother was only 7 months old. Such a hard life and not even one hundred years ago!

I think I saw that marriage and wondered if it was your man. If he died in the war he would be on the cwgc site

I tried but no takers only one who died in July but Polly died in the June so no go - now I am stumped only thing is to trawl death registers from 1910 to 1915 - oh the joys of genealogy!
