News Chronicle - Manchester - Eccles

Hello

I have just been sent a photo taken from a newspaper.  Above it is written
News Chronicle 2 Sept

I know it is from 1930 and it is a picture of Eccles Borough Band and their trophy from the Belle Vue Open Championships the day before.

Does anyone know if "News Chronicle" was the real title of this paper or whether it was Manchester Chronicle or something like that?  I can't see it listed here..

Does anyone know if Manchester Library or a records office have old copies/microfilm of this newspaper?
...or....for a real miracle - copies of photos

Or would Salford Local History Library be better?

It would be great to track down the original and see if there was a report to go with it.

The Manchester Chronicle & MEN are on microfilm & viewable at City Library.  If you are going to the library I would pre-book a filmreader.  Some days are busy some not.  So if you are making a special visit it's better to be safe than sorry.

I'm not sure where the "real" papers are probably squirrelled away in the Archives office.    If it's a Manchester paper you are wanting it's probably better to go to City Lib rather than Salford LH Lib.

Thanks  - I presume it is a Manchester paper I want as it is about Eccles.   But I don't know if Manchester Chronicle is the same as "News Chronicle" or not.  Although presumably the Manchester Chronicle would also have covered such a momentous event

Certainly there was a national newspaper called the "News Chronicle" until the late 1950's.  I remember it well   Apparently it was "absorbed" by the Daily Mail.  Maybe they have the archives.

Newspapers . Manchester Evening Chronicle  Eccles and Patricroft Journal Manchester Evening News are the ones most likely

that you will need to look up.


If it mentioned Eccles Borough Band I think The Eccles and Patricroft Journal would be your best bet. I remember that Band  from

my school days They used to have their rooms inCorporation Road Eccles.

Do a GOOGLE search for Eccles Borough Band it is a good site telling you of the Eccles Borough Band  and its history

Thanks Ecclescake - Yes I have seen the band website and been in touch with them in the past. The history bit on the website tells the story of the momentous victory of 1930 which is great but doesn't have photos of the band.   I have been searching on and off for a few years and came across this photo on another site (about Belle Vue) and I am almost certain I have spotted my grandfather.  I'd like to see the original to be 100% and
also because it would be nice to have a better quality copy.

Now - not satisfied with the photo - I want to see a write up of the event and who knows - maybe a piece on the band and/or some of the the bandsmen.  We genealogists are never happy with what we've got and always want more don't we? 

The clipping says News Chronicle but I think perhaps it may be the Manchester Evening Chronicle as that is local and the "News Chronicle" was national.  But the other papers may have covered it too... So thanks for all those.

(I'm still very excited to have found the photo though   The internet is such an amazing thing)

Hi Milly
I too am researching Eccles Borough band as my g grandfather Alexander Marsden & his brother Edward George Marsden who were both there in 1930 at Belle Vue when the band won the first prize . When they returned in triumph the whole town turned out to meet them as they marched down Church Street to Eccles Town Hall where they were greeted by the Mayor of Eccles and their public.

I have photos on Pinterest - link above one from 1930 at Belle Vue i think (i can not make out where the bandstand is) with writing on reverse by my grandfather Harry Marsden Alexanders son (also a Brass bandsman and godson to the bands conductor Mr John Dow).

The band were loyal to Mr Dow as most had served along side him in the war according to my grandfather.
Im planning on making a trip to Salford to see what i can find in the archives so if you need anything, please just let me know.

Hello Joanne. How interesting.

The Belle Vue win is folklore in our family. My grandfather died when my father was only 14 so we never met him and my father knew very little. We know he played cornet and trumpet as we still have them. And we know he was there in 1930 as we have his medal. Do you still have the medals given to Alexander and Edward?

I have seen the picture linked on your pinterest page and I think that the one who looks most likely to be my grandfather is on back row in the middle (fifth from the right) holding a cornet.  I have not seen the original in good quality so I could be wrong.

I would love to hear more of your family memories of this event.

The Manchester Evening News has always kept its name.  The Manchester Evening Chronical was renamed in the late 1800's as the Evening Chronical (known as the Chron).  In the early 60s the Manchester Evening News took over the Evening Chronical and they became one paper, often referred to as the News Chronical.  Not very confusing, then!  I would imagine that for the years you're looking for it would be the Evening Chronical.  Hope this helps.
