Is there anyway of finding out where these people came from.

From the list:  Oliver McClea   Donegal  14433.   Trying to trace him to a townland.

Thank you

the Flax Growers list is a rather limited listing of Irish flax growers who were awarded spinning wheels for growing flax, in order to boost the linen industry, in 1796. All that is Included is the name of the grower, the home civil parish and the county. No home townland is given.

Griffith's Valuation, another census substitute, lists the McCrea's leesors and leassees  in Donegal c.60 years later.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/ has a good deal of info and its a good place to check.

The Proni Wills Callendar has 200+ Wills for McCrea, 15 of which are from Donegal.

applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearchResults.aspx

So a bit of info about him, his children, marriage etc might make it easier to identify him.

PM

Have you any more info on Oliver?

Added later - see I have misread the surname - but have a look at GV and PRONI anyway, PM

Hi

I am trying to trace the Mcclay/McClea family from Trumman East.

Working backwards

According to the GV there were four Mcclays at Trumman East

Joseph born c1814   House & Land  32 acres

John McClay   House & Land  79 Acres

Adam        House, Land & Flax Mill    28 acres

Andrew with Land  and offices  10 acres

James with land and offices  15 acres

Church Records for Trumman East/Trumman and Cool which was an area of Trumman prior to GV

Adam and Jane would appear to have three sons Andrew,John, and James all born c1805/1822  There are daughters as well

Adam & Mary had a son who died c1830

Henry & Margaret had a daughter c1813 Henry died prior to the GV

Joseph had a son Robert.  Joseph was born c1814 Robert took over Josephs farm.

The only common bond is Oliver possible birth 1750 and Sarah of Trumman East who had children in 1785 but can only find  daughters.

As I am sure you are all aware records are patchy.

Thought and suggestions would be helpful

Pat

Is the following any use to you?  It's late here and I'm tired, so not quite following connections between Oliver and  Trumman East etc., McLay/Mclea.

G10483|McCleay [McClay/McCleary]|Andrew|Drumhome|Donegal|1 wheel.
G14433|McClea|Oliver|Stranorlar|Donegal|1 wheel.

You originally asked for Oliver who was in the Flax in the parish of Stranorlar, but the above Andrew is in the Parish of drumhome which contains Trumman East.

Hi

Thank you for your reply.

Can you please tell me how you found out that Andrew was in Drumhome and Oliver was in Stranloar.  I can only get Donegal.

Benn trying to break down this wall for years.

Many Thanks

Go to

 http://www.failteromhat.com/flax1796.php

Just type in lea for surname and click Donegal for county. Scroll down and you will see them both.

I use another database too, which I actually thought you also had, when I saw the number at side of Olivers name.

I'm curious as to where you got the Flax entries without the parishes :)

Hi

I typed in Flax Growers List and thats what I got.  Not very helpful in the scheme of things.  Thank you for the site you in your reply.

Trying to piece together a very difficult family as there seem to be a lot of females and not many males in the family.

Regards
Pat.

If you go to

http://applications.proni.gov.uk/Freeholders/default.aspx

and type in Mcclay , you will see an entry for Oliver in Drumbo, Stranorlar.

I realise that you are unsure if there is any connection to Oliver, but perhaps worth a look and  to file for future reference.
