Albert Leonard Mills was my grandad and he was wounded in WW1 in Ypres France he was shot in the head whislt carrying water amazingly he survived and was sent home to London deemed unfit for sevice, he was in hospital for a long time. What I am tring to find out is what General Service medal would he have recieved I have been told that there are at least 18 different types and to find out what one he got I need to know where he was stationed overseas before the fighting started ? he was in the Berkshire Regiment and I have found a regimental number on Ancestry  10082 he was a Private at the time of his wounds.Would anyone know where the Berkshire regiment was statioined before the fighting started

You should apply to the: Army Personnel Centre, Civil Secretariat, Historical Disclosures, Mail Point 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, GLASGOW
G2 8EX for a copy of his service record.
His service record will list all the theatres in which he served and also the medals he was entitled to and if they were issued.

At the risk of sounding pedantic can I just point out that Ieper (Ypres) is in Belgium.  Best get that right for any history you may be writing up etc.

The Royal Berkshire Regiment had two of its regular battalions in France/Belgium, plus two Territorial and three Service battalions.  Also some Labour battalions, before they became part of the Labour Corps.
Each of these will have had its own series of numbers.
You can obtain an image the medal index card on Ancestry or from The National Archives, documents online.  The latter will cost £2 by card.  This will show his medal entitlement and MAY have other details.
The 1st Battalion was at Mandora Barracks, Aldershot at the outbreak of war. The second was in India.  The Territorial base was at St Mary's Butts, Reading, where the Service Battalions were formed after the outbreak.

If his Service / Pension record has survived, it will be on Ancestry. Be prepared to be disappointed though. Only about 30% have survived.

As he was discharged due to wounds, he should have the Silver War Badge. His medal index card will show which Roll that is on. Look for a List number on the card. The SWB Rolls are also on Ancestry. This should show you when he enlisted and when he was discharged. It may, or may not show his battalion. The Rolls for his medals almost certainly will, but they are only available at Kew.

Start by getting a copy of his medal index card. The Ancestry ones are far better quality and show both sides.

10082 albert,l mills landed in france on 23rd november 1914.he was entitled to the war+victory medals and the 1915 star,he was discharged through wounds on 14-7-15 and awarded silver war badge No 6440
both the 1st+2nd berkshires were in france by november 1914
