For nearly 40 years I've been trying to find the origin of my 4g-grandfather as have many distant cousins, none with success and a few with undocumented speculation. Here is the substance:
The marriage of George Fullerton and Margaret Pirie was recorded in the OPRs for both Dun and Dunnichen parishes in 1739. George is recorded as the tenant at Mains of Dun on the birth of his first child in 1740 and begat a large family before relocating to Benholm, Kincardine, about 1759. No one has been able to find the origin of either George or Margaret.
A memorial in Benholm, erected by a son about 1802, states that George was born 1707 and Margaret 1714. The only George I've located born in that year was in Lunan Parish but nothing else associates him with George of Dun.
Dun Parish also had a James Fullerton living in Glenskinno, just north of the House of Dun. There were also Fullertons living at Kinnaber, a few miles east near the mouth of the River North Esk. Some have speculated that George was from one of these families but no documentation has been found.
Margaret is equally difficult to locate - the Pirie surname is uncommon in Angus (much more common towards Aberdeen) and shows up only occasionally.
Any thoughts - or to be really optimistic - solid information on the origin of George and Margaret (Pirie) Fullerton would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
