Just as extra notes in respect of timings....
IGI, from Family Search, that Carole has provided details on tails off for Scotland around 1874 when the Mormons stopped loading on data. There are a few (very few!) records past this date, some of which can be found on either the original IGI database but more likey the new combined Family Search database that Carole has linked.
In England and Wales you can search for births on line from (mid?) 1911 onwards including mother's maiden name which is obviously a big help. You cannot do that in Scotland on the main on-line records site,
www.scotlandspeople.gov.ukHowever, I understand from a previous discussion here on RC, that you can include a mother's maiden name for births but only if the search is being carried out in person at one of the on-line terminals at the main genealogy centres and only for births post 1927/8 (I would have to ask Forfarian who originally posted on this to comment further if this is the period you are interested in researching).
