Thank you!
I have a fair amount of info about William. I believe he was born in Cork in approx. Oct 1822. And was also married in Ireland to Eliza Skelton before coming to Australia, where he lived and died. He was a school teacher and I believe he owned numerous properties in Dublin, leaving some to his daughter in his will. What I'm really struggling to find is a lot of info about this father, George, grandfather Arthur and great grandfather Arthur Snr. (and wives). I've got rough dates for births, death and marriages etc. but probably more so, particularly with my travels to Ireland coming up soon, looking to see if anyone is aware of any sites I can visit linked to William, George, Arthur, Arthur and any other members in that direct line. Prehaps their graves, properties they owned/lived in etc. I know that's fairly broad but just wanted to ask in case someone had come across something. But as I said, literally any extra information that can be offered is appreciated.

I would suggest that any Dublin properties, if they actually existed in his name, were long gone when Wm died. His father George had three chn from a previous marriage.   Wm didn't live in Dublin but in Dromore, Co Tyrone. He was a church organist when living in Ireland.  His father died when he was two years of age and his mother died in 1877 in Kilalla, Co Mayo.   Yes there is mention in his Will written and executed on 31 Jul 1897 but nothing listed in the real estate assets in his probate file.  Wm's family notes written before his death on 9 Sep 1897 contained errors possibly because he died from 'asthenia as a result of senile paralysis' from which he had suffered for the past 8 months.

I have researched this family extensively and a lot of the information attached to family trees on the net has been sourced from me.  I researched well before so much was available online.

If you would like to message me with your email address and details of where you fit into the family, I will attempt to assist you.  My research is not online.

Cheers

Jessika has been logged in and to date has not replied here or to my personal messages.

Her tree on ancestry shows she has much information which appears to have been copied from other trees the owners of which are also descendants of George Marshall DUNNE, son of Wm H DUNNE.  .  I don't have a tree online but have shared documents with others who have.

I have entered the DUNNE family known places of burial in Dublin on Find A Grave website.

Im not sure if the discussion about Arthur Dunne, esq is still ongoing but i might have some helpful info. Arthur is my great, great, great, great grandfather (1737 - 1814) and my research indicates he was married to Jane Gordon. Their son, William Hunter was my great, great, great grandfather and was married to Hester Dunne. I have a letter from my great aunt describing their family plot at Drumchondra Church in Dublin (protestant church of Ireland) which i visited when i was in Ireland last year. I found the plot—-which is very very old and all writings on the stones are gone!  With the assistance of a wonderful gentleman, Brian Freeman, who is historian of the cemetary he wrote up the church records of who is actually in the plot...which he referred to as the Dunn family plot. He also included a copy of the inscription for Arthur Dunn, esq which describes him as the crown solicitor of the province of Connaught selected by the king and country for this post in year 1798 during one of most eventful years in Irelands history. You might be able to locate this info online as i found it at one time, but have not been able to again!

Hi Patsydiamo  :)

Welcome to rootschat :)

Arthur [1737-1814] was married to a Mary [died 27 Jan 1787] and their youngest daughter was Hester 1764-1796, who married William HUNTER c1760-1794, on 30 Jul 1785 at St Mary's Church of Ireland, Dublin.

Arthur and Mary's eldest son, Arthur 1761-1792, my 4th great-grandfather, married Jane GORDON in 1780 in Dublin.   Possibly you have missed a generation in your research as I'm a fair age and Arthur 1737-1814 is my 5th great-grandfather.

Inscription from Arthur DUNN/E's grave in the church yard of St John the Baptist Church of Ireland, Drumcondra

* Altar-tomb south-west of church. White marble tablet, almost
obliterated, on south face ' : —

Sacred to the Memory of Arthur Dunn Esquire,
many years Crown Solicitor for the Province of Connaught
and first Captain of the Yeomanry [Eegim 1 ] of Cavalry,
Selected by his King and Country for this [honourable]
[post] in the year 1798, one of the most
eventful periods in the annals of Ireland. He was
no lefs distinguished by his Humanity
than by his Firmnefs and conciliatory Conduct in the
discharge of his important and
arduous duties. Having spent a long life with honor
to himself and advantage to
his Country, he died suddenly on the 21st of February
1814, in the 77th year of his age ;
leaving to his Family a proud recollection of his Virtues,
and to his Profefsion an
Example worthy of imitation.

Perhaps we could share our research to sort out any other differences.  I'm sure to have a few :)

Its very possible ive made an error...and i would not totally trust my tree as i am a complete novice (and not very good!) at this; so much so that ive decided to hire a researcher to fill in the Hunter/Nelson part of my tree. I would be happy to share what i have, but not even sure how to do this—- or if it would be helpful to you. The paragraph youve included is the one that Mr Freeman gave me at Drumchondra. He did tell me that earlier records of ancestors buried in the Dunn plot were lost in a fire so he was not able to provide that information.

Could you enlarge on the HUNTER/NELSON family.   I may be able to help you.

I do wonder if any other DUNN's were actually buried at the same location as Arthur 1737-1814.  His wife's parish record for her burial was at St James COI, Dublin.

His son Arthur's 1761-1792 parish record was for a burial at St Pauls Church of Ireland, Dublin.

I have details of the burial places of other DUNN's in Dublin but they are not of your line.

Cando..thank you for your offer, but now im unsure of all my information!  I will tell you what i know as fact. My grandfather, James Hume Nelson (1872- 1919) married my grandmother Bella Hunter (1875 - 1951) in Monkstown, Ireland. Bella’s father was John Elias Hunter (1825- 1895)- married to Joanna Fitzgerald (1845-)....beyond this im uncertain, but my great aunt wrote a letter indicating Bella’s great grandmothers maiden name was Dunne and they had a family burial  plot in Drumcondra churchyard, Dublin . She also said that  Bella’s grandfather was a solicitor and her father was solicitor general of all of Ireland (an exaggeration i believe, but that was my connection to Arthur Dunn) Based on that information and “hints” on ancestry.com, i came up with the following:  John Elias Hunter was the son of  John Arthur Hunter(1786 - ) and grandson of William Hunter (1760-1794) and Hester Dunn(1764-). Looking at some of my dates, it does appear that i may be off a generation, or possible even have mistaken siblings.  As far as the Nelson side of my family goes; i believe they are primarily from Edinburgh, Scotland and i havent gotten very far with that research. I plan to take what information i have and likely will hire a genialogist to help fill in!! I do think it might be fairly easy for an experienced researcher as there seems to be a lot of information about these families.
Thank you for your interest!
Shannon

I've taken my research from Wm's notes and used them as a guide.  I have found many parish records, civil records which are online from Ireland,  names in the Wills index, newspaper items, and other sources eg directories.  Wm's notes led me a merry chase and so for a period I put them aside and started again.  I have transcribed this summary from my family history programme.

Arthur DUNN 1737-1814 was married to Mary UNKNOWN - she died 27 Jan 1787.  Burial recorded in parish records of st James COI, Dublin. There were eight children. My ancestor Arthur 1761-1792 was the eldest [he married Jane GORDON in 1780] and your ancestor Hester 1764-1796, the youngest.

William HUNTER c1760-1894 married Hester DUNNE 1764-1896, on 30 July 1785 at St James COI, Dublin.  Four children - John Arthur 1786-1840, Clara Wilhelmina 1788-1861, William 1789-, and James Henry 1790-1830.

John Arthur HUNTER 1786-1840 married Jane Ann Mary GREENE 1798-1880, on 5 Sep 1815 at St Mary's COI, Dublin.  John Elias HUNTER 1825-1895 was their son.  I haven't recorded all their chn.

John Elias HUNTER 1825-1895 married Joanna FITZGERALD 1845-1885, on 27 Nov 1865 Carmoney, Antrim and I haven't recorded all their children however there was a Sarabella [?Bella] HUNTER born 18 Jan 1875  and baptised 18 Mar 1875 in the Parish of Clontarf, Dublin.  Parents John Elias and Joanna.  Father's occupation - in Court of Bankruptcy.

From the marriage registration [certificate] James Hume NELSON, full age, accountant, father John James T NELSON, seed merchant, married Belle HUNTER, full age, father John E HUNTER, Deputy Registrar, Four Courts, on 5 Jul 1905 at St Patrick's, Monkstown, Co Dublin

Edit to correct groom's father's given name.
